Swearing. Why?

I'n not averse to the odd 'FFS' or whatever, but it seems to me that the use of the C word is now commonplace on every thread nowadays. And i don't like it one bit.

It never used to be like this. Why the cultural shift? I never hear it spoken out loud so why is it suddenly ok to plaster it all over MN?

Is it suddenly 'en vogue' to sound like a drunken navvy? Words like cunt, snatch, twat etc are just vile. Can't we reign it in a bit?

No, cunt and twat are here to say I'm afraid.

Its moist I hate. Horrid word

Hi dummad,

Thanks for your post.

This is what we say in our Talk guidelines on swearing :

It's not our policy to delete swearwords (we are all adults, after all) but we do draw the line at obscenity, racist and disablist language, and wording that is truly beyond the pale. So, if you're not sure which side of that line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it.

Since when is using the word cunt and minge representative of being an adult?

Tortington Tue 23-Apr-13 13:28:29

oooh a dragon emoticon - how very cunting excellent

Adults are allowed to swear therefore mumsnet give us the right and don't censor us

MooncupGoddess Tue 23-Apr-13 13:29:12

We all have our private opinions on other people's language, OP... personally I find the increasingly common use of 'reign' for 'rein' rather teeth-gritting.

However, I am trying to be non-judgemental, and suggest you do the same.

Thanks for the message Rebecca at mumsnet. I'm trying to address the issue of swearing if you would like to read my post. You're speaking to the wrong person.

dummad Tue 23-Apr-13 13:32:09

Sorry but i find it shows a lack of respect to be honest. I bet you don't speak like that face to face with your friends or family, so why doesn't it extend to the online community?

I do in fact call my neighbour bitch face and she has in return called me a cunt so yes its not just on here.

Tough shit tbh. No ones going to stop because one person thinks its disrespectful

AnyaKnowIt Tue 23-Apr-13 13:35:39

Wouldn't say cunt in front of my mum, but anyone else I do.

I'm forever calling dp a cunt

YoniMatopoeia Tue 23-Apr-13 13:37:04

Nobody has yet called me an atrocious cunt. That makes me sad

dummad Tue 23-Apr-13 13:37:43

Oh and MN draws the line at all offensive language other than that which is gender specific. Nice to know that a black person is allowed to be offended by certain words but I'm not.

That's equal.

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

That's totally different. You just dont like the word cunt. Its not offensive.

Its like me asking everyone not to use the word moist as its offensive confused No its just a word I dont like.

AnyaKnowIt Tue 23-Apr-13 13:39:40

I could call you a dickhead op?

I'm all for equal ops smile

IamtheZombie Tue 23-Apr-13 13:40:40

In Zombie's experience, cunt is almost always used as a term of endearment on MN. (Not that she can recall anyone being fond enough of her to call her one. sad) When it isn't and if it is reported to HQ, it will be deleted.

Shrugs.

Zombie - You are a cunt grin

YoniMatopoeia Tue 23-Apr-13 13:42:16

Zombie you are one of my fave atrocious cunts.

I'd say it out loud if it was appropriate.

But your post is not about whether something is appropriate, it is about your own tolerance for language. If the words that offend you are not used by you, or to you, then I'm not really sure what the problem is.

JaquelineHyde Tue 23-Apr-13 13:43:13

I would happily add a knobchops in here or there alongside the odd cunt that I throw around.

I find usernames with no capital letters utterly disrespectful and incorrect.

That is my view.

You dislike the word cunt

That is your view.

Netmums is a site which does not allow swearing unless you do it like this c u n t

May i suggest you try there/

I agree with you dummad.

I actually find it quite childish. Sometimes posts just have that 'oh look at me allowed to swear so I am going to'. Yes we are adults and yes we can swear if we want to but it just looks lame if it over used. Swearing always has much more impact if it is used selectively.

I do agree about the word 'cunt' though. I never hear it in real life. No idea why it has suddenly become so acceptable on here. I think it is made worst because it smack of misogyny - a bit sad when the worst insult somebody can hurl at you is to name you after a female body part.
