Thread deletion getting on my nerves

Snog · 25/11/2012 06:36

Seems like thread deletion is becoming much more common on mumsnet and i find it annoying that threads i have taken time to post on disappear as if they had never existed. Can we not just delete inappropriate posts?
Why does the whole thread need to go?

It depends. There was a thread this week which would have made no sense at all if it were left, because several prayers asked for all their threads on it to be deleted, for good reason IMHO.

I've seen posters continually post personal attacks if they disagree with the content of the op. These attacks tend to be responded to and so HQ deletes whole thread.

A cunning plan if you like.

Moving threads I actually find more annoying as they cease to be purple in Active Convos.

But it feels like the work of the secret police when a whole thread is deleted without trace.
Could there not be notification of why threads have been deleted at least to those who posted eg this thread has been deleted because 90% of postings were personal attacks / thread likely to result in legal case for defamation etc etc
Transparency and accountability of censorship just aren't there and it feels Gestapo-esque to me
Mumsnet what say ye?

Gestapo-esque? I'm not sure MNHQ are rounding posters up in the middle of the night and making them disappear!

Maybe there should be a little board where MN HQ can list deleted threads and give a reason why.

A few of the threads that have been deleted this week have been because the op came on to talk about an rl issue, then the other person involved 'found' the thread and all out war started, specifically wedding dresses and birthday parties.

There are often threads about threads asking why they are gone

Seriously, please don't compare MN to Nazi Germany, please, that is HORRIBLE, no matter how upset one is that pearls of wisdom scattered by you are lost forever

TIA

HQ always, so far as I know, post a message saying the thread is going to go. Sometimes they even say why.

If you miss that, of course, you're out of luck.

And I am wondering if mentioning the Gestapo is a corollary to Godwin's Law.

Stupid to say the mnhq are acting like the gestapo.

And transparency? They are a private company, not subject to the freedom of information act. They can do what they like and are accountable to nobody.

If they want to delete threads which are made up by attention seeking twats then I am glad.

A fine Sunday morning to you all
Just to clear up a few things:-
We absolutely are not the Gestapo Shock

There have been occasional references to the Secret Service with regards to trolls truckers and the general hairy of hand inasmuch we don't like to give out our methods of why we may ban someone.

With regards to deletions of threads and indeed posts we're sorry if you think that.

YankTeeDoodleDantee is correct, we have indeed been trying to be much more transparent of late, as per the discussion on this very topic last month with Justine and Helen

Hope this clears up a few things
Peace and love

Oh did cheeky wedding-dress-borrower thread kick off? Damn, I missed it Sad

But the message is only up until the thread disappears and if you dont catch in that window you never know.

I just want to know what threads were deleted and why, that is all

The thread title and a generic reason for deletion would be sufficient for me.
I am not objecting to thread deletion but to the process of thread deletion.

There is lack of transparency here and the current situation is too Big Brother in style for my liking. Appreciate that this may be for technical rather than ideological reasons. Mumsnet used imo to be far more liberal on the subject of censorship and things seem to have shifted.

Sorry but we do disagree with you on this one, Snog.

We almost always post with an explanation for deletion prior to deleting a thread - and we try to leave that explanation up for as long as possible before actually deleting.

We also, when deleting a thread, type up a message that displays the reason for deletion, should you call up the thread url again.

We realise that this doesn't work very helpfully if you tend to view threads through Threads I'm On - but we have asked Tech to look at that and fix some way for the deletion message to display in Threads I'm On, too.

But, of course, if you're ever confused, you are most welcome to mail in to MNHQ and we will always be happy to fill you in on what happened and why a thread was deleted.

We appreciate that you may not always be happy with our decisions to delete but we really don't think we are Big Brother or the Gestapo or even untransparent.
