Search and display titles only will search for threads started by a person and will display only the titles of those threads.
"Search titles - display titles and messages" will search for any thread that a particular person contributed to, and show all messages by that person on the thread. If you also put a word in the top "include the words" box that word has to appear in the title of the thread.
So if you remember that there was a thread some time with pushchairs in the title and that tech put a message on it, you could put pushchairs in the "include the words" box and tech in the nickname box and get all threads that have pushchairs in the title, and that have at least one post by tech. BUT, unlike the first search, tech doesn't have to be the OP.
(Clear as mud. I used to be able to write properly once. What happened?)
Not the one which says Search thread titles - display titles and messages?
This one implies that it's only looking at titles by that poster, but it will display their msgs on those threads, you see, which is what is confusing me. I would like to find threads started by someone but I also want to have an idea of what they said to make sure I'm opening the one I want......
HQ, how are these different options meant to work?
How do you find threads started by a particular poster?
I thought you put the name into the 'posted by' box and then chose Search Thread Titles, but this has never worked awfully well. I get threads started by all sorts of people, and sometimes a thread or threads started by the poster I'm looking for are included; it's hard to tell one from the other though. I have to read the few words displayed and guess.
(Incidentally, in order to narrow the search down I sometimes do it again but include a particular topic. I was wondering if you could lump all the Locals together under Local, and put in an extra layer so that when we do want a topic we don't have to scroll through the million Local topics to get to Style & Beauty or whatever?)
And while I'm at it - sorry - I'm using an iPad, get here using Safari, I don't think I'm using the mobile version. I find the means of choosing a topic under Advanced Search a bit cumbersome. Scrolling through a very long drop down list (see para above ), then clicking the little arrows, then going through the next list... Can we not just tick the topics we want in the first drop down box and take it from there?
