And now it has. Can we please get rid of the bloody awful facebook link thingy now?
If we all become paranoid about what we say and where it can go THIS FORUM WILL DIE. Or at least it will just turn into nethuns.

A very personal thread about a difficult situation has been unearthed by the very person who should not have been reading it, and has put an MNer in a very awkward and possibly nasy situation. It would appear that it was because of the FB recommend button thingy.
(sorry if I'm wrong though.)
That was always the concern.
Other people said, Oh that'll never happen.
I thought it probably would happen, and to someone quite vulnerable.

And please no-one start asking who/what - it really doesn't matter and the thread has gone anyway. But it is just that the link between MN and FB is fraught with pitfalls and we don't like it.

I agree.
I haven't seen the thread but you have to question why anyone would 'like' a sensitive thread. Just odd behaviour.
but surely the facebook linky thing just posts the thread to that persons facebook page?
Surely if you were having a bit of a bitch about someone on your facebook you wouldn't then link to that thread?
I dunno.
I have only been on here 5 minutes and my brain is already hurting trying to work out what's going on
but who on earth would link a sensitive thread onto FB? its not the fault of MNHQ or the having of a FB button, its the person who linked it.

I don't know exactly how it happened but lots of Mners have one another on FB as well so it is not out of the bounds of possibility.
It just spreads, hence 'viral'.

I agree that MNHQ cannot be blamed for someone's poor judgement or a silly slip up, but if it wasn't there it wouldn't have happened.
Unless I go the wrong end of the stick.
Can't go back and check now though - thread gone.
I did find out that a friend of mine was an Mner recently due to her linking to a Mn thread.
Still trying to work out who she is. Coooeeee GN

Like the extra 'A' BTW Paggy - See? We are all becoming search engine paranoid!!! (Tis me - F............ N by the way.)
didnt they introduce a two click system though? so you have to confirm that you want to post it to your wall?
But we've been able to link threads to Facebook for ages, over a year I think? It's just that the icon used to be right at the top of the page instead of next to the thread title. And before that you could still link to Mumsnet from Facebook, you just had to C&P the page address.
Tbh (not knowing the thread or MNer you're talking about) I think you should be more upset with whoever caused the problem, not MNHQ.

My view is that having the button there, if you do facefuck (I don't) but if you do facefuck, it makes it more tempting to press - and I feel the same about the button on the top linking to facebook and to twitter.

Yes but the point is that even on the most harmless and non-sensitive threads there is a risk that people will be outed by links to FB.

Why start a thread but forbid us all from asking about the details? Send a PM to MNHQ if you don't want a discussion with others about it.
I think if you post something on an internet forum it is your responsibility to ensure you are completely anonymous. I can't see how a facebook button could be responsible for outing someone if they were careful. It doesn't make sense.

I'd for gotten about the button, I switched mine off.
I don't have face book anyway because it is crap and getting more orwellian by the day.
I am sorry to hear someone has been hurt by this.

I am not forbidding anyone to do anything, I just hope no-one mentions on this thread who is concerns otherwise this will have to be deleted too, along with the other two before it. It is irrelevent anyway, all you need to know is explained up ^ there and it is the issue with the fb button I am here to discuss, not the sensitive thread in question.
The reason I am putting it in a thread rather than pming MNHQ is because we had a long and heated debate a couple of months back about the potential for it to do damage, so it is of interest to many people.
