Brittany Camping - Carnac or Raguenes?

We have had similar quotes for mobile homes at La Grande Metairie, Carnac and Les Deux Fountaines, Raguenes.

If you have any experience of these sites, which one would you recommend and why?

Please help us to decide!

La grande Metairie is big, lots to do, but I wouldn't be comfortable letting my kids run free, which we do tend to do slightly at smaller sites. Really well kept, but don't expect peace.

I'm just back from La Grande Metairie - literally! Still unpacking. I haven't been to the others, so I can't compare, but we had a great time. I have teens, and they met other teens and had a great time at night. There were loads of smaller children too, who seemed to be having a great time.

The pool complex was great. My only - slight - issue was that there was just one bar and it got terribly busy and there were lots of very small children running about until late at night. What else do you want to know? The weather was OK-ish - two days of rain, but was definitely getting better. A couple of nice restaurants nearby, and loads of Ok ones in Carnac Plage. We cycled everywhere, but it was quite hilly. The beaches nearby were gorgeous.

Would definitely go back. HTH

Too many "great time"s in that post!

That's what I'm a little worried about - in what way is it noisy? My eldest (8yrs) would love lots of action, but I also want to be able to sleep! Did you make use of any children's clubs? Would you go there again???

IsLovingAndGiving Sat 21-Jul-12 22:09:27

Thanks Agent - really pleased to hear you had a great time wink. Did you find it was a noisy place? My kids love to go out and meet other children, and we would be happy to do that with them, but I still want to be able to get a decent nights sleep! We have dcs aged 8, 5 and 1 btw.

We went with Thomson Al Fresco, and their mobile homes were in a row at the edge of the site, so very quiet. All the activity is concentrated in one area - the bar, the table tennis, the games room and the play park are all at the top of the site. It wasn't terribly busy when we were there, but it seemed a quiet site outwith the bar area.

I often saw the reps with the kids clubs, and they (the kids) seemed to be enjoying it. There are ponies on site, too, that you can hire for rides and a mini-farm with goats etc. Don't know when you're planning on going, but our rep said that Aug was busy with English people, but towards the end of Aug into Sept, they had hardly any arrivals (but this could be because you're back at school...)

IsLovingAndGiving Sun 22-Jul-12 08:28:03

We're planning to go mid Aug, so I guess it'll be very busy then. Was there a quiet time set for after 11 pm? I'll ring and discuss where mobile homes are in relation to noise I think! Is the beach in walking distance from the site? Thank you for your responses.

Love Carnac area but GM will be very busy -try smaller sites right on beach at La Trinite? They have activities in high season.

IsLovingAndGiving Sun 22-Jul-12 09:03:49

Have you stayed at Gm or la trinite [iwas]? Is gm too busy do you think? I'm struggling as know dcs would love somewhere busy with lots going on, but I also worry about it being too much.

Iwasagnome Sun 22-Jul-12 09:15:26

Yes we used to go to GM when children were younger until we discovered these other sites.Camping de la Baie and camping de la Plage at La Trinite--they mean you can go onto the local beaches without having to put everyone in the car or have parking problems and you can easily pop back to camp at lunchtime. Also there are lots of other beaches you can get to easily Carnac ,Men Du,St Colomban and also Quiberon peninsula.
GM would be good in June but a bit raucous in August with about 10 operators using it but it does have good facilities.
PM me if you want and we can chat .

OBface Sun 22-Jul-12 09:20:30

I went to GM as a child and loved it. Camped as a family all over France and this was probably our very favourite site.

IsLovingAndGiving Sun 22-Jul-12 11:10:09

Decisions, decisions. Think dcs & dh are up for raucous fun. I am happy with that, so long as people are quiet at bedtime! We visited L'atlantique last year and had a lovely time - I just want this hol to be as good or better really.

Iwasagnome Sun 22-Jul-12 11:14:08

don`t think they will be quiet-sorry
can you request to be well away from bar area?

The bar is cleared by 12, and there was no noise after this. The security man sent the teens home then too, even though they were in the football pitch far away from the mobile homes. We cycled to the beach out the back gate, but I think it would be too far to walk. Just a short drive though.

dreamingofsun Sun 22-Jul-12 12:36:17

been to both. both lovely. as people say one at carnac is busier and larger. local beaches near both great. carnac is slightly further south so maybe weather slightly better. les deux fontaines maybe better if you like a slightly quieter site. you can walk to beach along track through farmland and you can drive to another beach which is similar to those in cornwall and park on grass verge. les deux has a big field where people gather in the evening to play football/cricket etc.

men du beach in carnac is one of our top favourite beaches and we are fussy.

i'd be happy with either and preferred both of these to atlantique (though we had crap weather when we went there)

IsLovingAndGiving Sun 22-Jul-12 13:51:11

Brilliant. Thank you. We enjoyed L'atlantique mainly as the kids made some good friends & overall thoroughly enjoyed their stay. There wasn't much going on in the evenings, but they mainly played with friends by the mobile home. I think having a bar and more to do would go down very well with the dcs.

Other point now is to do with holiday provider. Les deux would be a 3 bed van booked with Venue holidays - cheap & cheerful company we used last yr. La Grande would a 2 bed villanova (all that's left) booked with keycamp. Unless I can find a better quote elsewhere. Any thoughts on this?

Your help is very much appreciated.

bigTillyMint Sun 22-Jul-12 15:26:34

envy sad

Know both of these - 2F will be quiet at night, GM may not, but we have stayed at many sites and never, ever been kept awake by any noise!

You may find the weather slightly better in Carnac, but it is also quite comercialised. The beaches in the Raguennes area are beautiful, like unspoilt Cornwall. And my favouritest ever beach is there! If you go to 2F, look out for the local Fest Noz - it's fab, especially on a sunny night.

IsLovingAndGiving Sun 22-Jul-12 19:52:36

That's brilliant - great feedback everyone, although I am still quite confused!

I think we might go for the keycamp, la grande metairie option as I think the dcs will enjoy it there most. Just not sure if the keycamp villanova will be big enough, but I'm sure we'll make do.

IsLovingAndGiving Sun 22-Jul-12 21:19:19

[dreamingofsun] - if you were to go back to Brittany with 3 young children, where would you honestly choose?

I have also made an enquiry to Thompson Al Fresco to see if they would be able to match or beat the offers we have already had from Keycamp and Venue. Does anyone know if their mobile homes are really as beautiful and new looking as they are in the pictures?? Also, do they have kids clubs?

bigTillyMint Mon 23-Jul-12 07:04:14

Raguenes in a heart-beat!
But we always camped in the other site there - Rg Plage in the same 2-tent spot with some really good friends (about 5 timesblush)
They had kids clubs there which always looked well-run - I bet it's the same everywhere.

IsLovingAndGiving Tue 24-Jul-12 08:26:08

I think we're going to book Carnac as we'll get the kids clubs with keycamp, although I keep getting torn back to raguenes. Looks like we'll enjoy both from what you've all said. Really hope this wonderful weather continues.

IsLovingAndGiving Tue 24-Jul-12 08:27:33

Sorry, I meant we'd get the kids clubs with keycamp - a luxury we've never had before!

hi, away so sorry for delay. think either would be good. there are pros and cons of both. one for this year and the other for next? carnac is bit busier.

Hi
We are first timers on this type of holiday ... We are looking to book les 2 fontaines in south Brittany from 25 may in a 3 bed mobile home with decking
Can anyone offer any advice?
Has anyone booked using venue holidays ? They appeared in the MOS in their 'best buys' and they do offer well priced packages?
Also what's the climate like in south Brittany end of may ???
Thanks!!!

makemineapinot Wed 16-Jan-13 23:42:41

Les deux fontaines was lovely and o much less busy and commercialised than Carnac. Would go back.

makemineapinot Wed 16-Jan-13 23:44:29

End of may would be a wee bit chilly I would think but probably lovely and quiet. We've been t Brittany at the en of June which was nice. Weather similar to Cornwall if that helps.

dreamingofsun Thu 17-Jan-13 11:05:23

when the kids were younger our normal holiday was a mobile in brittany may half term and the week after. the weather was normally very good - i don't remember it being that chilly - we still went on the beach in swimming costumes. we did have holidays when it seemed to rain every day - but these were sometimes in aug.

may half term week was normally full, but you don't have all the french on their hols then. so very easy to park at beaches etc. the second week was even quieter, but everything was still open, so lovely.

it could get cold at night though in the mobile. we had gas fire on in the morning - though we also did this one morning in aug in the vendee.

agree weather similar to cornwall/south coast of uk, but bit warmer and not so wet.

carnac is not busy at that time and men du beach is one of the loveliest anywhere. you can visit lots of other places around there - vendee, auray which are lovely and there are loads of very quiet beaches - eg picnicked beside a beach with around 6 cars parked, eating in a field of orchids.

on saying that les deux fontaines is also lovely, espec the walk through the fields to the beach. Don't know about venue hols. personally hate decking as reduces pitch size to pitch badminton net.

south brittany has a microclimate which is similar to norther vendee - if you look at the stats.

Thanks
Has anyone booked using venue holidays ???
Any feedback welcome!!!
