Hi folks! Ds took 10+ at kgs on 4 jan and we haven't heard anything yet 2 weeks on... Just wondered if anyone else out there was in the same boat. I bit the bullet and called admissions last Friday and she said they hadn't started doing the calls yet for interviews as they were focusing on 11plus (although we had been advised would hear within 2 weeks).... Let me know if you hear anything! Ds also took the hampton 10plus but was his first ever exam and raced through it without checking... Was no suprise when we got a rejection letter (15 places out of 250 odd sitting the exam!!!)

Hello, have you tried also posting this on the Local Kingston talk board? Here's the link:

Heard nothing so far so am keeping fingers crossed

Alana1975 Wed 22-Jan-14 10:00:31

we have not heard anything either

wheresthebeach Wed 22-Jan-14 10:59:58

If I remember correctly offers don't go out til mid Feb so still a while to go.

amidaiwish Thu 23-Jan-14 16:44:57

Yes but mid February is yes/no letter. The admissions pack said interviews would start 2 weeks from the exam. So surely if they'd got an interview we'd have heard by now. I must say my impression of KGS has plummeted since the exam...

wheresthebeach Thu 23-Jan-14 16:59:09

Someone on another thread phoned last Friday and was told they were prioritising 11plus and hadn't started on 10plus yet. Basically a guessing game.

wheresthebeach Thu 23-Jan-14 17:00:45

Doh...or this threads OP!

Pop1ns Thu 23-Jan-14 20:25:10

We contacted KGS on Monday late afternoon as we had missed a few calls and wondered if it was them. They said that they still had not contacted any 10 plus entrants yet.

amidaiwish Thu 23-Jan-14 21:11:55

So why do they say in the pack interviews take place 2 weeks after the exam. They are MEAN!!! grin DD & DH seem to have forgotten all about it, I wish I had.

amidaiwish Thu 23-Jan-14 21:15:23

Does anyone know if the "no" letter is banded like the Hampton one? Ie 1.you are amazing, on a short wait list. 2. You did well, hope to see you next year for 11+, 3. You are well off the pace.
Not saying that is how they are worded but you get the gist!!

castlesintheair Fri 24-Jan-14 09:43:13

amidaiwish, I don't know if you get a banded letter (do Hampton do this now?) but you can ring the school and get a fairly good idea of how they did. We did this with DS last year and the year before. Although the feedback was confusing at times. Interesting that they are taking so long at KGS with the 10+.

Pop1ns Fri 24-Jan-14 14:24:33

Just received the general email from KGS, processing of exams taking longer than anticipated so will hear sometime next week

Alana1975 Fri 24-Jan-14 14:28:30

İ received the same email apologizing for the delay in response

amidaiwish Fri 24-Jan-14 14:29:57

Me too. Wonder if they saw this or got fed up of people contacting them!

castlesintheair Fri 24-Jan-14 14:32:45

Suppose it must be the sheer volume compared to previous years that is taking them so long. Last year we had a call for interview within a week of taking the exam, albeit 11+.

amidaiwish Fri 24-Jan-14 14:33:02

But really instead of "next week" they could say "all letters will be posted 1st class on x day". Hampton did, turned it around under a week.
Quite inconsiderate really.
People are right, you learn a lot about a school going through the admissions process. Communication is so important.

amidaiwish Fri 24-Jan-14 14:33:51

Those doing 11+ heard in about a week.

ajhamilton Fri 24-Jan-14 16:18:06

Hang in there! It's a great school once you're in!

Contessa28 Fri 24-Jan-14 17:41:33

Strange I didn't get an email! I did spa to them and they said posting letters out today all being well... Good luck all!!

Contessa28 Fri 24-Jan-14 17:41:55

Spa? I wish!! Meant speak!!

amidaiwish Sat 25-Jan-14 10:31:37

Nothing in the post today.
My friend was talking to a tiffin tutor yesterday evening. She said the delay from KGS was because they had set the exam too low and were struggling to identify the top 10% who they normally invite for interview.
Not sure how reliable that info is.

Shootingatpigeons Sat 25-Jan-14 12:20:58

It doesn't sound right to me. They have 100 + places and they are going to offer a lot more places than that, as the brightest will get offers from more than one school. They do two sorts of interview as well, at 11+ anyway, the general interviews where it seems they are almost certain they will offer a place providing your DC doesn't deck one of the other DCs or fails to string a sentence together (in my DDs case it was a charm offensive fun discussion designed to engage them with the schools ethos and learning approach.) Then they have subject specific interviews where they test out areas that appeared weak in the exam. I am sure they will interview more than 10% based on that. In fact I can't think of a single independent school that would only interview 10%. Even for other schools that screen out after the exam like LEH it is over 50%.

More likely just the difficulty of getting through that number of exam papers. They are not just tick boxing, they are evaluating strengths and weaknesses, looking at the way they have tackled the questions as well as accuracy. A tiffin tutor would probably struggle to conceive of such an exercise hmm

Plus Tiffin tutor and reliable source of information on schools in the same sentence would be an oxymoron as far as I am concerned.

And I agree there is no problem with the extent and nature of their communication with parents ( just look at the Heads letters on the website, by far the most honest and open Head of any of the indie Heads, they are a far better indicator of the school) it is a great school when you are in.

amidaiwish Sat 25-Jan-14 12:39:31

This is for 10+, not 11. They only interview max 40 for 25 places.

amidaiwish Sat 25-Jan-14 12:46:43

But I see what you're saying re volume and tiffin tutors!

Shootingatpigeons Sat 25-Jan-14 12:47:24

Point taken but the rest of my points apply, they will presumably be having to look even more carefully at the papers to discern the most able as they do not want to risk giving those places to any but the most deserving.

That would be more reflective of the school than it being a matter of poor communication, not valuing the parents.

All those who have come through the West London independent school system as my DDs have will tell you that KGS pupils have almost uniformly happy experiences and feel the most valued as individuals. Parents are very happy too ( though I am sure there is the odd one hmm )

ClaraMaugham Sat 25-Jan-14 16:13:19

Shooting do you have any idea how many places they offer at 11+? My DD had an English interview, which surprised us as English is supposed to be her stronger subject. She felt the interview went well but it's so hard to know! We really like the school...

castlesintheair Sat 25-Jan-14 20:08:53

Great post(s) Shootingatpigeons. Agree with everything you say.

Pop1ns Sat 25-Jan-14 22:07:04

What does having an 'English' or 'Maths' interview actually mean?

amidaiwish Sun 26-Jan-14 11:42:06

afaik it is a 1 on 1 interview where they focus on that topic. So they might ask them to read a poem and discuss it, or give them a maths question to do. Typically when they have fallen down unexpectedly in one paper.

Shootingatpigeons Sun 26-Jan-14 11:51:48

Clara I don't know but they must over offer by quite a margin. I presume they take their experience of how many people decline a place and then over offer to that extent. I know LEH and Putney High both ended up with extra classes in particular years because they had more acceptances than they anticipated, which suggests at least 28 more offers than places but probably more than that (and LEH and Putney are pretty sure of a high proportion of Junior School acceptances anyway) Obviously if they get more rejections they have the waiting lists which can move quickly, so it obviously isn't an exact Science. Remember most pupils will be declining two or more offers if their parents have pitched where they tried for realistically. On the morning acceptances / rejections were due in I encountered a lot of parents who like me had debated the decision to the wire and were driving about West London delivering their final answers!

pops if a pupil has displayed a weakness in the exam that they are concerned about they will interview them to find out if it is a genuine weakness or they just didn't show what they were capable of on the day. I think KGS are the only ones who formally tell you ahead that it is a Maths or English specific interview but I know other schools often do test out pupil capabilities in interview if they are concerned.

ClaraMaugham Sun 26-Jan-14 20:06:18

As I understand it they interview everyone who's scored above a certain level on all papers, but if one subject seems weaker they will focus on that in the interview. If there's a real weakness in one or other subject then you aren't offered an interview at all (this happened to a friend's DS - she rang for feedback and was told the English paper was not up to the required standard).

Contessa28 Mon 27-Jan-14 05:53:40

Thanks for the clarification all. Clara I assume that your friend's ds was for a previous year? Hope post comes this week soon so we know either way!

Shootingatpigeons Mon 27-Jan-14 08:16:46

clara I am not sure it is that simple. When I got feedback for my DD, to try and help us make up our minds, I found all the schools had built up a good picture of her strengths and weaknesses, where she had lost and picked up marks. They picked up that she struggled with accuracy and misreading questions (still does!) I suspect they are eager to pick up the bright ones who may not have the benefit of years of tutoring / prep school preparation. I think even if they don't get an interview they have been looked at holistically rather than it being a first past the post exercise. However if the number of applicants start climbing I don't suppose they have time to make a such a good job of that, hence the delays.

Shootingatpigeons Mon 27-Jan-14 08:17:22

Also hoping your DDs the best of luck

harrassedswlondonmum Mon 27-Jan-14 08:18:04

On the subject of over offering, on another thread someone linked to a very interesting table on the Old Vicarage school website - numbers of offers and places accepted for their leavers. For example in 2013 there were 22 offers for PHS and G&L but only 3 acceptances between them. That's a lot of offers rejected, just from one prep school.

reddidi Mon 27-Jan-14 09:04:22

Statistics mentioned on this thread about 11+ entry which is probably better than hijacking a 10+ entry thread, this process is confusing enough!

Contessa28 Mon 27-Jan-14 17:14:39

Post update: still nothing and still waiting! Ds v anxious to know either way re 10 plus!

amidaiwish Mon 27-Jan-14 18:01:49

Torture. I would have forgotten about it by now if we'd have heard when we expected to. I showed Dd the KGS uniform in bentalls today. WHY did I do that? Must get a grip...

Contessa28 Mon 27-Jan-14 21:39:40

Post update: still nothing and still waiting! Ds v anxious to know either way re 10 plus!

Alana1975 Tue 28-Jan-14 12:43:14

I have not recieved any news from KGS. I am very curious about the outcome, especially after it took so long.

Contessa28 Tue 28-Jan-14 12:50:50

Oops posted twice ... Nothing today (Tuesday!) anyone heard anything???

wheresthebeach Tue 28-Jan-14 12:59:13

Not a dickey bird....

castlesintheair Tue 28-Jan-14 13:12:39

Nothing and I'm expecting to hear by email so possibly sooner than regular post? confused

amidaiwish Tue 28-Jan-14 13:58:23

Why are you expecting to hear by email?

wheresthebeach Tue 28-Jan-14 14:02:04

Am starting to get grumpy....

amidaiwish Tue 28-Jan-14 14:21:39

Now that I know it'll be this week I am ok, it's only Tuesday. But I will not be ok this weekend if still radio-silence!

Contessa28 Tue 28-Jan-14 15:47:41

How did your dc find the tests?

wheresthebeach Tue 28-Jan-14 16:06:01

Math hard, rest 'fine'

Alana1975 Tue 28-Jan-14 16:20:50

My daughter recognised the extract ( at least she thinks she did) for reading comprehension. İt was from the book she just started to read Chinese Cinderella, the story of unwanted daughter.
She found it challenging but manageable. She found mathematics easy. I practiced with her some verbal reasoning papers, Bond 10-11 years old and she thought VR at the exam was at the same level of difficulty.

amidaiwish Tue 28-Jan-14 16:39:01

DD1 finished the verbal reasoning in 20 mins. that's not good is it?
she thought the comprehension was fine, although did the classic error of not turning over the paper to see there were more questions until late so had to rush the last few. It will have been worth doing the 10+ purely so she has learnt not to do that again! I will see if she can remember what it was about, that book is certainly not anything she would choose to read.
Maths she said was ok but a few hard questions - she couldn't do the last one, a complete the grid number square, not that it sounded particularly difficult just she didn't know how to approach it.

castlesintheair Tue 28-Jan-14 16:47:14

amidaiwish, we are currently overseas.

My DD said it wasn't that hard yet she only finished the VR paper. Obviously speed and not daydreaming is the main issue to work on with her!

My DS had a really irritating habit of finishing everything alarmingly quickly (and then not checking it) and he still got 2 offers last year, one at KGS.

amidaiwish Tue 28-Jan-14 17:00:31

ah I see, so in theory they should email you when they post ours so you may know first. At least I don't have to leap up everytime my email pings. grin

castlesintheair Tue 28-Jan-14 17:04:55

Yes that is what I am assuming. I keep rebooting my phone as it's not pinging enough!

Contessa28 Tue 28-Jan-14 18:20:40

My ds does the same as yours castlesintheair! He finished all the paper and said he checked 'most' of them but his idea of checking and mine are different eg he could well have answered an entirely different question and just checked back the answer to his imagined question!! Well done for you ds two offers. We're they are 10 or 11plus and where for if u don't mind my curiosity?!?!

Contessa28 Tue 28-Jan-14 19:06:29

Ds found maths hardest (tho usually strongest subject) then English esp essay as it wasn't creative writing which he prefers (apparently was 'your greatest achievement?') then verbal reasoning 'not too bad'... Come on postie WE WANT TO KNOW!!!

amidaiwish Tue 28-Jan-14 19:08:32

yes the creative writing topic was terrible. I sighed when I heard that. That was where DD would/could have shined. oh well... but I am not sure how anyone can write well/creatively on that topic unless they go off the wall and write about managing to eat a giant meringue or something !!

Contessa28 Tue 28-Jan-14 19:28:52

I could write a novel about eating a mountain of chocolate!!!

reddidi Wed 29-Jan-14 01:04:56

From the information emailed to 10+ applicants:

Offers will be sent by first class post on:

Thursday 13th February 2014 for all students

All acceptances are due by noon on Friday 7th March 2014.

Note there is a separate thread for 11+ handholding.

amidaiwish Wed 29-Jan-14 05:27:05

Reddidi, the point is, if you read the whole thread ! That by this date interviews will be completed. The 10+ candidates are still waiting to hear re interviews.

Contessa28 Wed 29-Jan-14 06:41:24

Reddidi, we should have received letters 2 weeks after the exam (which most took on 4 jan) to let us know if our dc will be interviewed or not. That way if you are not successful at getting an interview then you know. The exam was over 3 weeks ago now (although some took it on 11 jan apparently but even still we are over two weeks from that date) and we should have had that letter by now stating if its an interview or rejection. Once interviews happen (which for 10 plus it appears haven't even started yet) then we will have to wait until mid feb. kgs sent through an email stating those first letters should be sent out this week .... So we are due to hear this week about the first stage.

I am waiting with baited breath for the postman so I know whether to prepare my ds as he will be so disappointed if he doesn't get an interview! Would be interesting to know for how many who took the 10 plus whether kgs is first choice and should they receive an offer down the line would they take it and pay the 1300 fee this year to secure a place?

reddidi Wed 29-Jan-14 09:17:05

Yes I have read the whole thread and my sympathy goes out to those waiting for 10+ interviews.

There seems to have been some confusion with people posting in this thread about 11+ entry and on the 11+ thread vice versa, I was just trying to avoid perpetuating that.

amidaiwish Wed 29-Jan-14 09:53:31

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Contessa28 Wed 29-Jan-14 10:14:48

We aren't 100% on indie either as know a lot of excellent students at salesian. Also looking at rgs, hampton as well as kgs... But decided against reeds and st georges as just couldn't see value added of all that money compared to an outstanding state school with first hand experience of a* students there who love it and are doing brilliantly both academically and on a personal level.

wheresthebeach Wed 29-Jan-14 11:03:15

Post come and gone....nothing. Shoulders slump...

Contessa28 Wed 29-Jan-14 11:05:41

Post arrived and nothing again today... Anyone else?

amidaiwish Wed 29-Jan-14 12:00:46

no post today, I am sure it doesn't come later than this so am assuming nothing too. oh well, got to be tomorrow or Friday, surely!

Alana1975 Wed 29-Jan-14 12:06:56

nothing as well

Fruitbat05 Wed 29-Jan-14 13:06:38

Nothing's come here either!

Contessa28 Wed 29-Jan-14 13:11:00

Well at least can be sure then not been mislaid by rain-sodden postie! When I spoke to them Friday they said they would send out that day or Monday so must be more delays... Does make you wonder about efficiency though...?

castlesintheair Wed 29-Jan-14 13:38:11

No news here either, not that I am expecting anything other than a no! KGS is our first and only choice at the moment.

LynneNeverDone Wed 29-Jan-14 14:02:26

No news here either. KGS our 1st and only choice at the moment too. The first 10+ letter said:

"The interviewing procedure starts 2 weeks after the (Jan 4th) entrance exam"

so DH and I assumed KGS letters/calls would begin on Monday 20th so delay hasn't been that long, but feels like an eternity when you're waiting! Fingers crossed because last Friday's email from KGS said we should all be contacted this week. Good luck everyone!

Alana1975 Wed 29-Jan-14 16:49:14

I got a general email from KGS saying that letters will be sent tomorrow

amidaiwish Wed 29-Jan-14 16:50:43

Let's hope they're posted 1st class !!

Pop1ns Wed 29-Jan-14 16:57:26

Yes letters being sent out tomorrow according to email, so we will hear Friday or Saturday. No need to therefore be on the lookout tomorrow for anything....

wheresthebeach Wed 29-Jan-14 19:25:51

Some sort of explanation would be nice. It's not like they could have been surprised by numbers!

Alana1975 Thu 30-Jan-14 13:37:26

İ got a call from KGS, my daughter is invited for the interview.

Contessa28 Thu 30-Jan-14 14:18:42

Well done alana1975 that is fantastic news! Congrats to your dd and you must be relieved! Is it a general or subject specific interview? Bet you can't wait to tell her the news after school!

Alana1975 Thu 30-Jan-14 14:33:32

Thank you very much for the congratulations. İt is a general interview.
I wish you all the best luck.

Pop1ns Thu 30-Jan-14 15:36:47

Just received a call that our DC has a general interview next week. Although very relieved, we still have another hurdle to overcome. This has been very trying and so drawn out. Good luck to you all, I know how it feels to be waiting for news whether its good or bad....

Contessa28 Thu 30-Jan-14 16:13:57

Boy or girl? Just wondered if like 11plus they do girls first?

Contessa28 Thu 30-Jan-14 16:14:39

Sorry sent too soon! Congrats also and good luck!

Pop1ns Thu 30-Jan-14 20:55:54

Thanks Contessa. DC is a DS.

Pop1ns Thu 30-Jan-14 20:56:57

Maybe it's alphabetical order?

Fruitbat05 Fri 31-Jan-14 11:53:16

Not as keen on the post mans visit today! At least it'll make the conversation about tutoring a little easier with DS, he'll understand the need.

Good luck to all doing interviews. Let us know how they go.

Contessa28 Fri 31-Jan-14 12:39:26

No for ds sad gutted for him as he was quietly confident

Alana1975 Fri 31-Jan-14 13:20:24

countessa28, you have plenty of time to prepare for 11+. I think it was the right decision for all of us to take this exam to test the water before 11+.

Fruitbat05 Fri 31-Jan-14 13:33:14

Yeah I agree and we did nothing extra for 10+, so it was always a punt, just feel sad for DS, doing the exam was a big deal for him. In better news I've a friend who's DS failed the 10+ badly (when they got feedback) and is now a very happy student in KGS. Heads down for next year!

Contessa28 Fri 31-Jan-14 16:36:36

Yes agree with all that. 11 plus is the biggie and this was a practice - have to keep perspective! Just a shame no feedback til 10 march ie 2 months after the exam! Good luck to everyone interviewing x

castlesintheair Fri 31-Jan-14 17:25:29

I haven't received my email rejection letter yet confused

1973Mum Sat 01-Feb-14 08:12:41

Got an email yesterday - prior to the post - saying that if my son had been unsuccessful I could speak to them after 10th April.... Surely they could have waited a day or two to give us a chance to receive the letter!!!! Poor communication. Compared to other schools I think they have a lot to learn about marketing, communication and giving an impression at least that they care!!! Other schools turn round response to exams in a fraction of the time and made the process a much better experience. You're off my list Kingston Grammar!!! Shame as I was still thinking if it for my other kids... Not any more. Poor form.

Contessa28 Sat 01-Feb-14 08:30:53

Well said 1973 mum. Have to say my impression of them has plummeted. Hampton provide a much nicer letter and were super helpful in providing feedback straight away which helps dc work out where they can improve and even motivates. Getting an email before a letter basically saying you were unsuccessful but don't call us til 10 march - 2 months after the exam - hardly has the child's interests at heart!

Chooknhook Sat 01-Feb-14 09:58:21

Firstly, I must be honest with you all and say that my DD sat for the 11+ at KGS this year, not the 10+ but I think we've all had a similar experience. My opinion of KGS has been severely dented by the whole exam process as well as the apparent lack of care when contacting interviewees. There was no rhyme or reason to the calls, it was a random, scattergun approach...
Friends of ours were called, to invite their DD to an interview a whole week before others (also DDs). Children were left feeling like failures as their friends got the callback and they were left languishing...
We did eventually get a call for an interview but think we'll probably take up an offer elsewhere even if we are offered a place - (results posted out next week).
I'm not sure why the process was so disorganised this year, maybe it's the same every year? The news that Mr. Dunlop is leaving at the same time as the current head is further reason to look again at other options. confused

6 or 7 children from dd's year at school went for KGS and none had the problems you describe - I think the 10+ marking/interview calls were affected by the large number of 11+ entries (largest ever so I heard) and the time it took to get through them.

Contessa28 Wed 05-Feb-14 07:31:05

Countessdracula I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean they didn't have to wait 4 weeks to get the letters (rather than 2 weeks as promised) like the rest of us? The problem really is the lack of communication and a disregard for how best to manage the process for the children sitting the exam, who for many this will be the first experience. Kgs had an opportunity to showcase their school and procedures and IMO have been severely lacking. Other schools turn the process around quickly and they all do know in advance the number sitting. My particular issue is if it is a rejection, then it is in the children's interests to find out why ASAP -again as other schools in the area do - rather than receiving a blunt 'don't call us till 10 march' email. Equally if it is an interview then it is much fairer for all the letters to go out first and then subsequently to contact for the interview rather than there being a situation that some have been contacted for an interview whilst others hadn't even yet received a letter. It is this lack of communication which presents a school which cares less about the 'whole child' despite the rhetoric.

Pop1ns Sat 15-Feb-14 19:47:42

DS was offered a place yesterday, so we are very relieved, after a long journey. Good luck to those who are going to take the 11 plus, I think it will be harder to get into these schools as our year is a bulge year, so do give KGS another shot for those who did not get in.

Alana1975 Sun 16-Feb-14 11:49:23

Pop1ns, congratulation on the offer. My DD had a general interview and I got the impression that it went well. The teacher who interviewed her told me that she has done very well as the exam and her school report was very good. However, I have not heard from KGS yet. Did they call you?

Pop1ns Sun 16-Feb-14 12:40:50

Alana, thanks for congrats. We had the general interview, but teacher did not mention school report or exam. We received the offer in the post Friday afternoon, with the prospectus and agreement letter, albeit a very soggy letter with the envelope almost ripped off completely, which the postman had folded in two to get through the letter box. Maybe the weather did not help? Good luck and do let us know. smile

Alana1975 Sun 16-Feb-14 14:32:17

thank you for letting me know. We live in Asia at the moment so I suspect it will take a while before the letter will reach it. It is good to know that they sent letters instead of calling. If it won't arrive next week, I will give them a call.

Pop1ns Sun 16-Feb-14 19:32:16

Good luck and at least you haven't been affected by the recent awful weather here!

Alana1975 Mon 17-Feb-14 11:35:26

My DD got an offer for 10+ deferred.

Pop1ns Mon 17-Feb-14 20:20:40

Congratulations! See you in 2015.
