Has anyone heard from the South West London Independents?

(106 Posts)

Getting more and more nervous here.

Thinking especially about the Emanuel, KCS and Ibstock (well, have not done the exam for that yet so really just the first two...)

mimbleandlittlemy Wed 23-Jan-13 12:26:45

As Emanuel pre-interview everyone, they send out their offers/rejections on 14th February by post so you won't hear anything before that.

Don't know about KCS or Ibstock.

stclemens Wed 23-Jan-13 17:11:16

shall we handhold together? I think KCS said they would call for interviews next week so we'll know soon enough. We are also waiting on CLSB - as DS is doing 13+ he has yet to sit his Hampton exam.

I hear that some people are already getting letters through, ahead of the 14th feb date.

So, lets handhold!

St Clements, THIS or next week?

stclemens Wed 23-Jan-13 23:28:11

I think letters will go out from KCS wk beg 28th?

Thanks, I have by mistake thrown away the letters in a post exam excited flurry. hmm

OhDearConfused Thu 24-Jan-13 09:43:27

PureQ I hear that some people are already getting letters through, ahead of the 14th feb date.

Sorry - which school did you mean by that? KCS or CLSB?

None of these. I was just wondering if the rejection letters are sent out earlier, or the acceptance letters in case some turned their place down in order for more children further down the "waiting list" could get offers early.

Never done secondary admission before so not sure what to expect. Parents locally seem to have differing experiences.

castlesintheair Thu 24-Jan-13 14:19:01

PureQ, from my understanding (and current experience) a school might invite your DC for an interview and then you get the final judgement letter on 15th Feb (posted 14th). Some schools (Hampton and KGS for eample) send out a rejection letter at the same time as they make the interview calls/letter. So effectively it is a culling process in stages. I think KCS are calling this week for interviews next week with scholarship calls first. I am not sure if they also send out the first round of rejection letters at the same time but I am expecting it to be the case as they offer more places than they have.

Can you tell I have been thinking about this a lot wink?

So, if we dont hear anybody by end of tomorrow that means we were not successful for KCS?

hear anything not anybody hmm

stclemens Thu 24-Jan-13 15:54:03

sorry we are 13+ so we may be on a slightly different timetable (was your exam 19 Jan?), but my understanding is that we won't hear until next week about interviews (or not) - I will check the letter when I get home. It sounds like you won't know on Emanuel until the 14th though.

Yes, the exam was the 19th. He says he did not do as well as he hoped, so we dont really have any expectations.

stclemens Thu 24-Jan-13 15:57:43

so it depends on which schools - on their stated timetable, CLSB is actually later than KCS at calling for interviews despite the fact that their exam was earlier.

stclemens Thu 24-Jan-13 16:01:09

DS said the maths was easy! which always makes me worry as writing is not his strength....

DS did not think that maths was easy at all, he said he figured he only managed 75% correct. I reckon there will be plenty of kids who sail through it and get everything right. Only 11 places for 11+ I understand, and hundreds of kids sitting the exam.

kingstontwinmummy Thu 24-Jan-13 16:20:32

We got a phone call from KCS for being invited an interview this morning.
They are now sending the results!
It was to my DH's phone, which I didn't expect at all!

Regarding the test last Saturday, my DS said maths was okay(his strong subject though), eng was quite tough. so, no idea where he stands, but phew...am glad he has reached this far. smile

tomtommum Thu 24-Jan-13 16:41:57

was that for 11+ or 10+ ? my DS sat 10+ but I am not wildly optimistic......

kingstontwinmummy Thu 24-Jan-13 16:45:58

it was an 11+ exam. maybe they have a different timetable for 10+.

Well done for getting this far Kingstonmummy!

stclemens Thu 24-Jan-13 21:06:34

great news - well done.

tomtommum Fri 25-Jan-13 12:56:44

i've just spoken to admissions at KCS and they are notifying 10+ parents all the way up to next Friday (1st Feb), so the very kind lady said if we hadn't heard anything by then to assume its a no.....

tomtommum Fri 25-Jan-13 12:57:23

ps and congratulations Kingstonmummy on getting The Call !

castlesintheair Fri 25-Jan-13 13:39:45

tomtommum, do you know if that applies to 11+ too?

Well done Kingstonmummy and DS.

I hope it applies to 11+ too....

I feel like the worst mum in the world putting my son forward for KCS, with so few places available and so many applicants.

But I guess the same could be said for Ibstock and Emanuel too. And he has his last exam tomorrow. I just want to wrap him in cotton wool and feed him chocolate and ice cream. Go through all this, with the possibility of not getting any offers. sob.

tomtommum Fri 25-Jan-13 14:45:31

I don't know if it applies to 11+ as well - sorry, pureQ and castles, in the heat of the moment I totally forgot to ask.

However, logic would dictate that if they all sat the written papers on the same date and offers are being sent out on the same date, which is indeed the case, then I would think 11+ interview calls will go on til next week.

But that is pure speculation on my part....

tomtommum Fri 25-Jan-13 14:50:24

and PureQ, you are hardly the worst mum in the world when you are striving to give your DS the best education in the world....

if it's any consolation I felt like i was sending him off to the gallows when my DS sat 10+ last week at Kings.......

good luck with the last exam tomorrow, the end is in sight...... and am sure you will get good news soon.

castlesintheair Fri 25-Jan-13 18:50:41

Thanks tomtommum. I've heard from another source that they've only done scholarship calls this week so, yes, it may well apply to 11+. Whilst there's hope ...

PureQ, I know exactly how you feel. I was a total mess earlier for the same reasons and then felt like I'd failed DS even more because although he's a naturally clever boy, he's untutored and from a state school which from what I've heard and seen over the past few weeks doesn't give him a chance sad. I have been feeding my babes pizza and icecream tonight and letting them OD on digital stuff. Good luck tomorrow. It feels good once they've finished.

Ds is just doing whatever he wants tonight. He has a massive pudding of blackberry and apple crumble and mascarpone ice cream. He has spent the evening in his PJ, sitting in his bed reading, or watching scooby doo on I player, or Fails videos on Youtube.

He is also from a state school background, and only been tutored because we were outside the uk curriculum between Y2 and Y5. He is also bright, but I fear disadvantaged due to not having lived here all the time, and read all the books his peers have read, and covered the same topics in school. Oh well.

stclemens Sun 27-Jan-13 12:42:38

DS has had his last exam - hurrah! We will know next week if he has any interviews (wibble).

Unfortunately he didn't get through for Radnor but is apparently on the waiting list which we will know about after March 4th - as DS found the maths horribly easy this confirms my prejudice that it is only if the maths is hard that he will shine.

Ds also had his last exam yesterday, and he also came back saying the maths was extremely easy, but the literacy really hard. So, this mean he wont have shone either!

Fingers crossed for our ds the next couple of weeks!

I shall be so glad (or maybe not) when 1st of March has passed and we have some certainty!

tomtommum Tue 29-Jan-13 16:57:19

no news is not, methinks gloomily, necessarily good news.....

stclemens Tue 29-Jan-13 19:40:09

no letter as yet sad

no letter no phone calls here either....

GETASHLEY Wed 30-Jan-13 14:28:25

Been lurking first post here, Anyone heard anything, or any idea how many KCS interview at 10+? I heard that the first calls for interviews went out last Tuesday. Ultra bright boy at DSs prep had an interview last Wed - we are still waiting!!

tomtommum Wed 30-Jan-13 14:43:52

just heard a boy in my ds' class got call yesterday for interview today at KCS 10+...... but the school did tell me they were calling up to this Friday 1st, so whilst I am resigned to it not being good news, there is a very tiny insy winsy small glimmer of hope......

OhDearConfused Wed 30-Jan-13 15:56:13

Oh dear, just found out there were 180 DSs sitting the 10+ for City. And there are only 40 places.

The odds are so high - and it's our only option (other than one more year at state primary).

Does anyone have a feeling of how many of those 180 would have sat other 10+ tests?

My sense is not many (since there aren't that many offering much of a 10+ entry). So unlike 11+ where you can console yourself that although there are five applicants for every place, each of themwill have applied for 5 schools. Not same at 10+. IYSWIM sad

tomtommum Wed 30-Jan-13 16:33:43

i think you would be surprised how many do try out for other schools at 10+, i know a couple who have tried 3 or 4, of which most were deferred entry and thus the preferred choice. so you never know.

it's hard not to feel flat as a pancake, but I guess we just have to be philosophical about it all.......

looking forward to getting home from work to wine !!!

OhDearConfused Wed 30-Jan-13 16:50:14

Thanks, tomtommum, feeling better already. Hope you are right.
thanks

KingscoteStaff Wed 30-Jan-13 17:25:09

The interview letters for KCS 13+ pretest are out!

stclemens Wed 30-Jan-13 18:39:06

Thanks - they have sent an email as well and ds has interview for Friday!

bearmoma Wed 30-Jan-13 19:56:58

Has anyone heard from Hampton re interviews for the 13 plus pre-test? Nobody around here seems to have heard a peep but someone must have as interviews were scheduled to start tomorrow!

stclemens Wed 30-Jan-13 20:10:37

Not yet - I did think the Thursday date seemed tight!

Well done, and good luck for interview!

Shaded Thu 31-Jan-13 11:45:36

OhDearConfused good luck with CLSB, letters to be posted today. I gulped hard at that 180 number for 10+. Oh well, what will be will be.

Think there are just 11 places for the 11+ or thereabouts... So not holding out much hope at all!

stclemens Thu 31-Jan-13 12:12:00

OhDearConfused that is not bad odds. I think there are maybe 300 that sit for 40 places at 13+ at CLSB?

KingscoteStaff I take it your DS got an interview as well? We are still waiting on CLSB and Hampton....

At our school I think all four that sat 13+ got an interview which is good predictive work by the parents/HM.

OhDearConfused Thu 31-Jan-13 13:57:21

Thanks, Shaded. Will know tomorrow or saturday.

stclemens - yes, but I think my point was that at 13+ (and 11+) the applicants are applying to many schools each. My DS - and I expect most of the 10+ applicants - have only CLSB on our radar! At least I thought so until tomtommum reassured me not.

But still, yikes 300 for 40 places. Grim odds indeed even if each are applying for 3 or 4 or 6 schools each!

tomtommum Thu 31-Jan-13 14:15:21

10+ odds aren't great anywhere you go - 70 boys at KCS trying for 8 places ?! first time I have dipped my toe in to this pool and frankly I find the whole thing terrifying / demoralising..... sad

But like they said at KCS at open day "few children apply only to one school, most apply to 3-6 schools so there is always the possibility of a place"....

KingscoteStaff Thu 31-Jan-13 20:22:30

5 boys from DS's school had their KCS interviews today. Apparently they are 'jolly friendly' and it was all 'jolly quick'!
We have to wait until Monday....

Shaded Fri 01-Feb-13 09:49:08

We have our letter from CLSB and DS has an interview for the 10+. We got our news early because his dad went to the sorting office and begged for the letter. Good luck all.

OhDearConfused Fri 01-Feb-13 10:13:25

Well done to your DS.
Fingers crossed for the rest of us

stclemens Fri 01-Feb-13 23:02:19

DS had his KCS interview today, English and general followed by Science and maths. Apparently there were loads of boys there and multiple interviewers. Tip from our neighbour - don't sit until asked (one i would have ignored). I wonder how many they interviewed.

We also got letters for Hampton and CLSB today so DS has done well so far, cross fingers!

castlesintheair Sat 02-Feb-13 08:52:20

We still haven't heard from KCS which is a confirmed no in my opinion sad

Good luck and congrats to everyone's DS who has had an interview.

OhDearConfused Sat 02-Feb-13 10:00:22

grin DS got the one 10+ interview he was hoping for.

Anyone know how many are being interviewed?

OhDearConfused Sat 02-Feb-13 10:00:57

Oops. In City of London Boys....

stclemens Sat 02-Feb-13 12:03:28

Well done to your DS, OhDear. castles are you waiting on any other schools? 11+ at KCS is tough - why we went for 13+ as odds much better.

I am amazed by how much DS improved this year from last Sept when he sat and failed pretty much all the grammar school exams.

Well done for securing interviews.

If ds does not get for 11+ do you reckon we could still put him down for 13+ at the same schools?

stclemens Sat 02-Feb-13 14:33:57

i think it will depend on whether the intake is a pre-test at 11 followed by CE or just a 13+ test. For example, Emanuel seem to do a 13+ test which you register for the year before:

here

Latymer have limited places available at 13+ for which you just apply:

here

I don't think for either of these it is CE it will just be another test.

At kings I think you either do 11+or 13+ so you can't do both.

Is there anywhere else you were thinking of?

stclemens Sat 02-Feb-13 14:35:14

I was going to say, your DS may still be successful - cross fingers for Feb 14th!

Shaded Sat 02-Feb-13 15:28:07

OhDearConfused very well done to your DS

castlesintheair Sat 02-Feb-13 19:18:57

Thanks stclemens. Yes waiting on 2 other schools for which he's had interviews. What you say about 11+ v 13+ is interesting. My DS has been a late starter for various reasons and has only "taken off" in last year which hasn't been quite enough some of the most selective but in a couple of years he could be quite competitive. The head at KCS told us though that if he isn't successful in 11+ he won't be at 13+ ... maybe that's because they can only sit for either or there, as you say?

PureQuint, some people do seem to move their DS to prep if it all goes wrong. We have it in mind if necessary but I had expected it to be harder.

I look and feel really old at the moment. This process is really trying.

Well, if it all goes wrong, then we know it is because he has been away from the UK for three years, and sort of jumped from Norwegian Y3 to London Y5, so effectively skipping Y4, and he has had lots to catch up on. He has been working like a hero, but he has not been reading the same books as his contemporaries the last 3-4 years, he has not covered the same topics in lessons, and was behind in numeracy, and has not followed the news in the uk the years he was away. This is why we only went for 3 independents, so as not to put so much pressure on him.

Just not sure what steps to take if he gets no offers, and not our top choice for RC secondary.

KingscoteStaff Mon 04-Feb-13 19:22:04

Ok, well interview over and he seems positive.

Now just 10 days to wait...

stclemens Mon 04-Feb-13 21:26:18

good luck to all. PureQ, don't despair - he sounds like a lovely lad and I hope you find the right school for him. For what it's worth none of the interviews DS has had refer to the news at all - they have been very generic (what do you like doing) or focused on specific questions on maths, science and English.

stclemens Wed 06-Feb-13 16:42:26

Has anybody else done Hampton? Funny questions (what do you want to be? What A levels do you want to take?) DS said he wanted to be a bio-geneticist (because what he really wants to do is to create genetically modified pets, which is a rather niche area) - ha!

My son wants to be the same as yours, because he wants to modify animals into pokemon! shock

stclemens Wed 06-Feb-13 18:20:51

That's funny - I wonder if it is more common than I thought! I think of Frankenstein, DS thinks of Wallace and Grommit...

Never heard of it before, so I reckon our boys are pretty unique. grin

stclemens Thu 14-Feb-13 17:20:39

well not sure how everyone else is feeling. I am just going to rabbit on so I don't bore everyone in real life!

We won't hear about CLSB until the 22nd but I don't think the interview went that well - and judging from other comments on the 10+ CLSB thread DS might fail on the "leaders" aspect (mind you he wasn't asked about his interests anyway there!). But Hampton and KCS all went quite smoothly according to DS. By the far the nicest were Hampton who seemed to go out of their way to sell themselves as a school to prospective interviewees and parents. DS so jaded at the end, he didn't take a biscuit at CLSB as they weren't as nice as the ones he had elsewhere (ie not chocolate covered).

I'll be at work tomorrow, so will have to wait until I get home at 7pm. And we won't find out about our grammar options until March 1 so one could say this is only yet another staging post in this very long process.

KingscoteStaff Thu 14-Feb-13 17:34:25

One more sleep, then we'll know.

Although knowing the Fulham post, probably two more sleeps....

I am less than hopeful, to be honest. He was not offered an interview at KCS. So really it is just the one now and on 22nd and then March 1st.

Marni23 Thu 14-Feb-13 19:33:56

We hear from all 4 of DS's potential schools tomorrow (post permitting). I am on the wine

Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

I wish I could have it all over and done with in one day... Nailbiting, though!

mimbleandlittlemy Fri 15-Feb-13 13:34:14

We heard today from Emanuel and it's another no for us so ds off to the comp up the road, however a whole lot of other friends haven't heard from Emanuel today as apparently they didn't get all the letters signed in time for the post yesterday so they didn't all go out (which I think is a bit shoddy to be honest but there you go). If you don't get the letter today Pure, that'll probably be why.

We had the KCS "no" today, but that was expected. Otherwise the post has been and gone so nothing from Emanuel. Which means that the letter is going to come tomorrow, and ds is likely to pick up the post and be all eager. sad Oh well.

Marni23 Fri 15-Feb-13 14:58:54

Call them, they'll tell you over the phone. Someone we know didn't get letter today either and they rang. We didn't apply, but I think it's a bit crap that they couldn't get all letters out on same day-they've had long enough!

KingscoteStaff Fri 15-Feb-13 15:51:52

I can't bear it, I'm sitting here at work and the letter's on the mat!

Or in a Fulham sorting office...

therugratref Fri 15-Feb-13 16:03:11

I have not heard from Emanuel, but have an offer from Whitgift.

stclemens Fri 15-Feb-13 16:10:48

I can't understand why they don't just email - much easier!

stclemens Fri 15-Feb-13 16:48:59

So no from KCS and Hampton here but yes from KGS (phew). Bit disappointed but I guess it was meant to be.

KingscoteStaff Fri 15-Feb-13 19:34:34

DS has a yes from KCS. We are on the way out for pizza!

Now just the wait for the St Pauls interview...

Tingo Fri 15-Feb-13 20:01:15

Re. Hampton - is 'congratulations, you are on the waiting list' in reality just a 'no'?

Copthallresident Fri 15-Feb-13 20:46:00

stclemens NOOOOO Don't be disappointed, lovely school, happy pupils. DDs both think it is the school that seems to suit everyone who goes, more than any other school, they enable the pupils to achieve and they all love it. Wish I had not been seduced by league tables and green acres.......

Congratulations on KGS, StClemens, a friend has a dd there, she is very happy.

I am hoping we shall at least be on a waiting list, and hear something after the deadline for acceptance passes.

stclemens Fri 15-Feb-13 21:22:26

thanks for all the advice. It was a definite no from Hampton and KCS. I do hate the feeling that DS has somehow not met a higher bar - I think it is more me than him tbh he will be happy at KGS I'm sure.

stclemens Fri 15-Feb-13 21:24:13

oh Tingo I think you are definitely on the waiting list as we are clearly not!

Copthallresident Fri 15-Feb-13 21:41:10

stclemens of course you feel that way as loving parent, I still feel a bit indignant Putney High didn't spot DD was a star at 4, but they missed out not her, she was way out of their league at 11 grin KGS actually punching above their weight in terms of Oxbridge etc, likes of LEH must be wondering......

castlesintheair Sat 16-Feb-13 09:09:56

stclemens, DS got into KGS and we are thrilled. It is my favourite school (after KCS) and I totally agree with Copthallresident's lovely comments about it. I have a feeling it will become one of the "much harder" schools to get into soon.

We haven't heard from Emanuel either. I only know of one who has and the DC was offered a scholarship.

We had the offer letter from Emanuel this morning and ds1 is very very happy, it was his first choice school, that and Ibstock.

stclemens Sat 16-Feb-13 09:48:53

aah fantastic news! I am really happy for you PureQ.

Thank you! smile

Marni23 Sat 16-Feb-13 10:12:26

That's great news! So pleased it's worked out well for you

Tingo Sat 16-Feb-13 12:06:56

Thanks Stclemens and congratulations to your DS for having a good offer under his belt. After months if prep we are on 2 waiting lists. In limbo basically.

mimbleandlittlemy Sat 16-Feb-13 12:07:17

When I got home and read the Emanuel letter (just had banner headline read to me at work), I found ds has got a place at Emanuel but did not get the bursary we need so we can't take it up. He's pleased at least that he did get in even if he can't go. So near, but yet so far...

mimbleandlittlemy Sat 16-Feb-13 12:07:40

Oh yes and well done Pure and all the others.

therugratref Sat 16-Feb-13 12:36:00

We did not get into Emanuel- despite having a DC already at the school, pretty gutted I have to say. But hey ho they got into Whitgift go figure

Elibean Sat 16-Feb-13 12:50:37

Wahey! Well done young Quint grin

I am still wonderfully far away from all this, and full of respect for those of you who have tackled the journey and survived - your LOs too!

dd2's BF's big sis just got a scholarship to Latymer Upper...she was convinced she'd failed.

Ladymuck Sat 16-Feb-13 14:13:20

"We did not get into Emanuel- despite having a DC already at the school, pretty gutted I have to say. But hey ho they got into Whitgift go figure" shockshockshock

I would be expecting to have an interesting discussion with the Head! Stunned schools are turning away feepaying siblings....

BoringSchoolChoiceNickname Sat 16-Feb-13 14:23:23

Go Quint Jr!
Haven't been on this thread as am applying in SE not SW London, but have followed your struggles and am vicariously pleased for your news. (We had good news ourselves yesterday from our second and third choice private schools, still waiting on choice 1 and Graveney but immensely relieved to have a satisfactory offer in the bag and happy to wholeheartedly congratulate everybody or wish good luck to those still waiting - maybe a MNer will get the one we're declining on Monday).

therugratref Sat 16-Feb-13 14:32:01

Both boys, despite very high maths scores failed to get the required 55% in the English paper (and also failed the resit they were offered) I am still not quite sure how they managed Whitgift.

therugratref I cant believe they did not offer them places if they had good maths scores.

How many classes are there for the 11+ entry? The offer letter said that they had reduced class size from 22 to 20 (if I read it right, ds is still hogging it)

stclemens Sat 23-Feb-13 14:25:06

so DS managed to get a 13+ offer for CLSB! Pleased if a little surprised as we thought the interview had not gone as well as the others. I may need to start another thread on the merits of 13+ at CLSB vs 11+ at KGS now...

Well done StClemens Junior!

Ds has now also an offer from Ibstock, so we are really stumped.

stclemens Sun 24-Feb-13 20:22:30

well done quintjr - now we just have to wait until March 1 to see which way the state school options go.
