A French friend of mine's son is applying to Oxford for PPE, and to the LSE for politics and something. Which other universities are good for politics in the UK? She has heard Durham.

I read politic and Economics at Durham in the 80s ,it is good but is now even more competitive to get into,Exeter also popular I think together with Bristol and Warwick.

Yes, a cousin of mine read politics at Warwick and then did a Masters in London - I must ask him!

Oxford and LSE are the best for politics in my (very biased) opinion. Bristol used to be good. Don't know if it still is. Manchester?

Off the top of my head Kings, Bristol, Sheffield, Warwick and St Andrews usually appear in the top 10.

Slightly less competitive but good 'brand names' and in the top 20: York, Birmingham, UCL and Nottingham.

What's the something in politics and something? Because he may want to look at rankings in 2 subjects if that's the case.

Durham actually do a PPE degree and are well known for being full of Oxford rejects!

UCL has ESPS, which is European Social and Political Sciences - basically PPE with a year abroad. It's popular and difficult to get on to - standard offer this year was A*AA.

If he applies to Oxford, he need to be prepared for the admissions system. Do check if his school does Oxbridge admissions sessions, and that he goes to any on offer. Also see if he can visit before applying.

My niece didn't get offered the college she wanted at Oxford, so did PPE at Manchester.

Oh there won't be any help at all at his school - you can get assistance via the British Council but you are really on your own. School/school system is not involved. But actually, that is not necessarily a disaster!
