What do these levels mean for Yr 7?

DS1, who has just started Yr7, has done some mid-term tests - I presume to determine what they should be trying to achieve for the rest of the year. He has been told that he should aim to achieve certain levels in different subjects by the end of the year - I think 5A was mentioned for French and 6-something for Maths. He may have been given levels in other subjects too but he hasn't mentioned them. Can someone enlighten me as to what these levels are or point me to a link which explains?

They are National Curriculum levels

Thank you, will have a read. Honestly, just when you get primary school all figured out you have to change schools and start all over again - for every new school boy/girl, there is an equally baffled parent standing behind them!

Well, if you know the primary system, including the levels he got for KS1 and KS2 SATS it's the same thing. The levels are continuous.
