My DD and maths

I've been on mn for a few years now and have posted and followed threads relating to maths and DD1s hatred of it and her poor performance in comparison to other subjects.

She has always been in a low set, had 1:1 booster sessions at primary, a T.As help at secondary etc etc...but is a clever girl in so many other aspects and subjects who just doesn't get maths.

My DH is very good at maths and set out on a programme of study with her at the start of year 10 (she's just started year 11) with a seemingly crazy idea of sitting her gcse at the end of year 10 to give her that confidence and to take the pressure off a little for year 11.

We've had ups and downs along the way! But as the Summer approached she was 'getting' maths and was holding her own more in lessons, hence we entered her privately, for the higher tier because as I've said she is a bright girl who clicked with the higher spec stuff.

She got a C!!Smile

I am so so proud of her and just wanted to share her story to maybe give a little confidence to others like her.

Why didn't you leave it until the end of year 11?

have you had her tested for dyscalculia? I have it.

fwiw I'm a scientist so it didn't hold me back at all. I am still horrible with maths but get by well!

That's great that she got a C, but the school will still want to enter her for the new GCSE in June - her result won't count for the league tables and maths is double weighted.

Because she is taking lots of essay-based GCSE and wants to concentrate on them this year to pursue a career in writing or journalism.

Noble yes she realises that Smile

mina it has been mentioned in the past. She may be. She's just learnt methods that work for her.
