how much time do your dc/ students spend on these subjects?

gillybeanz · 07/09/2016 19:19

was just looking for comparisons, for a Y8 child.

Mfl - 2 hours German/ French on termly rotation
Maths - 2.5
English - 2.5
Science - 2.5
Geography - 1
History - 1
ICT - 1
Art - 1
P.E - 1
R.S - 1/ PHSE rotated each week.

I can't remember as far back as when older dc were at secondary.
Is this about right/ usual. Thinking if any subjects will need support at home if they are less than others do.

Are you private or state? I guess Private with the Latin, but don't want to make assumptions.

There's adequate time given to Maths, English & Science, which is good.

German & French on a termly rotation seems a bit weird. I'd be concerned that she'll forget what she learns of each language in the term "off" and therefore will not make as much progress as she is capable of.

Do you have an idea of what subjects your DD will continue to GCSE? If 40% of their time is being spent on specialist/vocational learning, then I would focus on Maths, English & Science, plus any other subjects that she wants to do for GCSE.

DS is on a 2 week time table, but if I convert to weekly equivalent, it's something like

Mfl - 1 hour German/ 2 hrs French
Maths - 4.5
English - 4.5
Science - 2.5
Geography - 1
History - 1
ICT - 0.5
Art - 1
Music 0.5
P.E - 2.5
RE- 1
Catering 0.5
DT 0.5
Enterprise: 0.5
tutor time 1.7
(that doesn't add up to 25, so I must have estimated low somewhere)

Specialist music school, very small classes. Now they are set from this year there are about 12/15 in her core subject classes, with approx 30 in the year group.

It looks like she will have to up the core subjects a bit and maybe languages as she hopes to take these at GCSE.

Thank you very much for the time tables, very interesting. Thanks I was trying to remember what our other dc did but seems so long ago now, I forgot.

It seems very little compared to my son's school and we are abroad so he is only mornings 7-11.30, 4.5 hours contact time a day with a 20 minute snack break, afternoons for homework of about 2-3 hours and afternoon/evening for sport.

Spanish - 50 minutes
English as a foreign language - 1 hour 40 minutes (obviously he doesn't need this but he has no choice)
Maths - 4 hours 10min
Language/literature - 4 hours 10 minutes
Science - 2 hours 50 minutes
Geography - 1 hour 40 minutes
History - 1 hour 40 minutes
P.E - 1 hour 40 minutes plus 2 additional team training
Philosophy - 50 minutes

They only do Art in Year 7 and 11. Drama is incorperated into History/Geography and Literature where they do a termly production and no music or ICT.

That is different again, very interesting.
In terms of Art, ICT, Drama or Music do you feel you need to do extra in these subjects or is there compensation for these subjects after school?
i'm interested from a GCSE/ equivalent pov when they haven't had the same input/hours as other children.

Science should be 20% of the timetable in lower school.

My Y7 and 8 get 3 hours.

state school... lessons are 1hr 40 mins long and its 2 weekly timetable so I'm not sure how accurate this is but:

maths 3hrs 20mins
english 4 hrs ( 2 1/2 lessons each week)
science 3 hrs 20 mins
languages (50% spanish/ 50% french) 3 hrs 20mins
DT ( changes subject each term) 1 hr 20 mins
PE 1 hr 20 mins
geography and history 1 hr 20 mins each
music/drama/art/ computer science and RE 40 mins a week ( i.e. one lesson a fortnight)

I think that's it but I may have missed something off!
