What now?

The boy is confused.

The father is furious (like that helps).

I am so sad for him.

3 Us for what, Oakmaiden? AS Levels, or A2s?

Why is he confused? He must know why he got Us. What was he predicted?

What does he want to do/to be?

It is a long story, really. I'll truncate it.

Boy has ADHD and Asperger Syndrome, just to start. Took AS Maths Physics and Chemistry. Had a tutor. Was anticipating Cs. Had felt he did Ok in the exams. Not even close.

I think the problem is not with his understanding of the material, but his understanding of the questions and what they want as an answer. When working with his tutor he would go off on huge tangents. I think exams are just not for him.

I'm not sure what to do next.

I don't know what he wants to do now. He wanted to study astronomy. I don't think that is going to happen now. It is all he is interested in, though.

So these are AS results not A2? My first advice is please don't panic - your DS must be terribly upset. There are other options especially if these are AS exams? Cam you look at Btec courses? My DS has just finished 2 Btecs amd one A level - one of which was applied physics. Consistent hard work can achieve good grades with no exams - a distinction is the equivalent of an A at A level with the same UCAS points. Your first step should be to talk to his school/college.. Good luck

We are a U household too with a dyspraxic DD who took Spanish AS alongside a BTEC. She got a B for the oral, but so bombed out on the other paper it wasn't good enough to even get to a pass grade overall.

I would look at BTEC courses, there are things on the science side. He can 'restart' 6th form and take a further 2 years on his BTEC. Level 3 courses are A level 'equivalent' (Extended Diploma = 3 A levels, Diploma = 2). level 2 courses are GCSE equivalent.

The BTEC Support thread may be helpful to give you a general feel on how they all work. (I'm planning to kick off a new one in the next week or so).

Btecs at college are a really good option, no exams, but A level equivalent. Two of my friends' DSs started sixth form again doing btecs and are both now at RG unis.

Yeah, I have run down and got a prospectus. Apparently their courses are pretty much all running waiting lists, so we have to wait for the GCSE results to be out and then they will call him in for interview if there are any places going.
