Has anyone applied for a bursary? If so, I would like some advice.

We have 2 DSs at v.v. expensive schools. We have been drowning in debt over the past few years, as the fees have gone up over and above our salaries. I am ashamed to say that I started borrowing on 0% credit cards to cover the fees. I am making all the payments every month.[embarrassed]. Will this look really bad on our application? I intend to write a letter to say that the credit cards are loans for covering our school fees, rather than to be spent on frivolities.

Since our youngest DS started school a few years ago, I changed from a conventional FT to part time, freelance role (a few reasons for this, cannot say all as it will out me). I currently work all the hours available including evenings and weekends, but I am in a low-paid profession, and more so since working for myself. My DH works full time and can't take on any more work. Our combined income is probably around £100k after tax. School fees eat up about £45k a year before extras. Mortgage is about £1400 a month. We don't have expensive holidays, have not made any changes to the property for over a decade and we own 2 cars: one is over 10 years old, the other over 20 years. Professional fees also take up a chunk of income and so do bills for our house and dogs.

On paper we look wealthy but we are amongst the poorest parents in our current school, which is not representative. The new school is a natural feeder for the current school (hence why we have looked at it) and would be perfect for our child. It has big funds by looks of the report and we are not asking for a full bursary, just enough for our DS to attend the school.

What are our chances? It is a hugely competitive school but our DS is very academic. So far, the school has been positive about our applying. I am very [embarrassed] about the state of our finances. Is this a normal case? Will bursars be used to looking at people like us? I feel like we are undergoing the financial equivalent of a smear test but if it is worth a shot, I don't mind trying.

Has anyone else been in our position?
