Does anyone have a son in JMOB or ASR who could tell me what these houses are like please? Want to find a happy and inspiring house for DS! Like these two best from shortlist.........

Don’t have a son at these two houses but I have a fairly good idea what they are like.

JMOB (Waynflete House)
The housemaster is fairly new, replacing Richard Pratt who has left for Hong Kong/China appx. two years ago. The house seems to attract musicians possibly because it is located near the music schools. Boys at JMOB take their meals at Bekynton which is literally a stone’s throw away. Bekynton is the school’s canteen/restaurant for 11 out of the 25 Eton houses. Now, this is no ordinary school canteen by any means. Try standing anywhere up to a quarter of a mile away around noon time on any given school day and you can smell the delicious smell of food oozing out of Bekynton! Earlier this summer I sent a friend’s daughter from a state school to attend the Medical Careers Day and her first remark to me when I picked her up in the evening was, “The lunch at the school canteen was absolutely fantastic!” That put a smile on my face thinking to myself, “Wait till you try the lunch at College Hall.”

Although slightly out of date now but you can take a small peep at what Waynflete is like on this video when a new Palestinian scholar was admitted to this house in 2010.

ASR (The Timbralls)
This is the first Eton house you’ll see on the right when you approach the school via the Slough Road (B3022). It is almost (diagonally) opposite the playing fields. Perfect therefore, for a sporty boy who could just nip back quickly to his house after a tiring rugby match. Because of its location, parents will appreciate deeply come holiday time when they go to pick up their boys avoiding much of the mad traffic queues heading towards the school.

Unlike JMOB, ASR boys take their meals in-house. I’ve met the housemaster, Mr. Robinson previously and the meeting just confirmed to me what a perfect gentleman he is as first mentioned to me by a mother who finally decided on The Timbralls after agonising (like you now) between a couple or so houses. ASR boys seem to have a particular fondness for their housemaster.

But to all intents and purposes, except for College all the other 24 Eton houses are similar in nature. Just like buying a house in the property market, it really boils down to location. But unlike the property market where good schools are almost always of utmost importance, houses at Eton do not have this problem. You are already at the greatest school on earth! Grin
