Anyone else's DC in year 8 but still mostly sticking with friends from primary?

Not sure if this is a problem but am curious. When my DS started Y7 last September I thought he would be keen after being in a one form entry village primary to branch out and make new friends. A year later and he still spends most of his time with his two best friends from primary, one of whom lives nearby, is in the same school but not his form class and the other lives nearby but now goes to a different high school. His form class still spend a lot of time together (only setted for maths, English and science) and I get the impression he mostly hangs out with the three other boys from his primary who are also in his high school form class. He does mention lots of other names, a couple more than others, but no one he seems bothered about enough to want to meet up with outside of school.

His school report mentioned that he had many friends, gets on well with people and is generally well behaved (which he certainly isn't at home!). He is not a particularly shy child but not wildly confident either.

I just wondered whether other people's DC are similar and if so whether you have encouraged them to make new friends or just leave them be if they seem happy enough?
