Oh I so wanted this thread to just be that...so far...in every subject: I wouldn't have known where to start! He seems to have learned more in two and a half terms at secondary than in 4 years or more of primary (that's not to diss his lovely, caring and quite academic primary but, honestly, the pace at secondary...!)

In French: more or less the same as bizzey...except only present tense of verbs but regular -er, -ir, and -re plus etre and avoir.

booksandacuppa I know what you mean ...Science seems to be the worst to revise for ...they seem to have learnt everything so far .....

I know they haven't ..but all the basics are done in: Chemistry,Physics and Biology...and where to start revising for it is a nightmare.

We have found the bbc bite size quizes/tests good for showing up weak spots that need going over again.

He is good on "remembering facts and rules"...good for science and maths ...but English....!!! I think he is going to have to cheat and write ..paragraph on his hand to remember to "stop his flow " Grin !!

But he has got his exam time table and is showing interest in it ...ie "can I have a big packed lunch every day that week with lots of nibbles "!!!

Yep, in science I'm sure they've learned more than I did in 5 years!

Ds had his end of year exams before half term (they were full on academically up to then - and this half term is lovely extras and trips and stuff).

He only did about half the revision he wanted to but got really high marks in core subjects and respectable ones in the rest (not equated to nc levels yet, just percentages - it's an independent school and I'm not sure how they will report overall for the end of the year) despite some bad exam techniques (not turning a paper over and therefore missing 20% of the potential History marks!) so it's all good practice!

My daughter is doing fast track french, so will probably be ahead of a few. Her first text book has just been handed back in and we are awaiting a new one, so can't help in this regard.

I know numbers, days of week, telling time, questions and descriptions of people and towns have been covered up to April. For their end of year exam, she had a picture of a girl and had to write about her - describe her (long brown hair, pale skin, tall and slim, her age or whatever she could write), what she was wearing, pretend she was going somewhere, maybe at a certain time. They had previously had to describe themselves and one boy in the class wrote in french that he "wasn't trendy" so they've obviously come across quite a few descriptive words already.

Nothing - our school does German in Y7 - but in German (top group) they have learned numbers/days/time/colours/descriptions of people and pets/directions and how to get places/ what new uniform they would design - so lots of descriptive words about shorts/leggings/hats etc... Zoo animals, wild animals/sports/foodstuffs - how to order in a cafe, how to find the loo etc.. types of transport - how to ask for tickets etc..

They are going on a trip next month, so are now learning all the stuff you need to know to get around, how to ask for ice creams and tickets, being polite, what to do if you are lost (V.V.V. important!!) etc...

My DS is just finishing Y7 at a selective school where the vast majority of the children had done French for several years before, so he's had to catch up with some stuff that had already been covered. I think the amount they've done is insane, frankly.

Grammar-wise he's learned all 3 regular present tense conjugations, loads of irregulars (including devoir, pouvoir, vouloir, lire, ecrire, faire, aller, prendre...), near future (je vais faire qqch), perfect (both avoir and etre as auxiliaries) including lots of irregular past participles and imperfect. He's also learned relative clauses (qui/que), negatives (including ne jamais, ne nulle part and ne aucun), apres avoir and avant de.

Vocab includes all the usual - countries and nationalities, food and drink, family and the home, towns and transport, clothing, hobbies, school and subjects.

I know he's done all this as he has weekly tests which he asks me to test him on at home.

Wow. That is a lot, restitution. Probs GCSE level already.

I think what my ds (non-selective independent) has done is almost exactly the same as at the state selective I work in. I know for sure that it is a lot more than in at least two of the local non-selective state schools, because I know the two Head of MFL depts and they both said they don't do any verb conjugation until year 9...Shock

It seems unnecessary to me to do so much - but in fairness I should say they're preparing for Common Entrance so perhaps this is normal in Y7 in prep schools.

I know that my friend's son in top set at highly regarded non-selective secondary wasn't able at the end of Y7 to turn 'I'm hungry' into 'you're hungry' because they'd learned phrases rather than what they consisted of.
