Double lessons and what is STEM?

Just wondering if most lessons being double is a normal thing now?

DD started y7 yesterday and her timetable is full of double lessons. On a Friday she had double science, double maths and double english. That seems so full on to me.

Also, Does anyone know what STEM is? It's writen on her timetable, an hour a week but I have no idea what it means. Maybe something like PSHE?

And Learning Skills - is that just general studying and essay writing tips?

It all seems so different from when I went :)

Science, technology, Engineering, Maths

Learning skills could be anything, but it probably includes organisational skills, revision tips, essay writing etc

STEM is (I think) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

My DDs had some doubles, but the number of doubles has increased as they went up the school.

Learning skills is learning how to learn. It's now recognised that different people have different learning styles and techniques, and they'll be helped to work out which is their best learning style, appart from other stuff.

School is COMPLETELY different to how it was when I was at school in the seventies.

Ah, that makes sense Thank you!

I figured that about the learning skills but did wonder.

She doesn't seem to have any pshe. Maybe that will be on next terms timetable.

The only things that aren't double are history, learning skills and geography. Everything else is double and she has a triple PE lesson too. But they have a break after the first 2 sessions then go back for the third. I wonder if they will need to change back to uniform for lunch? They have a strict Blazer between classes policy so don't know how they would feel about them having lunch in PE kit.

How long are the single lessons? I have worked in schools with 35 min lessons in which most were double (eg English had 5 lessons in 2 doubles and a single)If they are much longer than this I am surprised the staff haven't mutinied! We now have 50 minute lessons and I had double Y9 this afternoon. SOmeone will die before the end of the year. Probably me.

All lessons in our school are 50 minutes. Less moving around I guess.
