Altrincham Grammar School For Boys

Hi

We know that our daughter is likely be in the catchment for AGSG in Lymm because of the eight mile rule.

We need to understand what proportion of the intake for boys into AGSB are from the Trafford Post Codes. Is it correct that after the catchment they go to highest scores and postcode becomes irrelevant? We are wondering if we should move to Trafford to give our sons an equal chance of getting in to the grammar?

Thanks

Cris

Hi there, not sure I can help much but the catchment area for AGSB is on the website - quite a small area I think (WA13/14/15 and some M33 postcodes all within Trafford). I think generally speaking about 2/3 of the places go to catchment boys, the rest go out of catchment and yes, its the highest scoring after than irrespective of distance (unless there are a number of boys with the same score and then distance comes into play).

I think for AGSG, although the catchment is bigger, they didn't offer to anyone who lived more than 6.2 miles away this year. I'm not sure how Lymm fits with that?

Hope that helps.

I know someone whose son got in this year from Appleton thorn. My son passed the entrance exam years ago (now 27yrs) but because we lived near northwich was offered Sale Grammar instead, in the end he went of to Sedbergh boarding school on a scholarship, but at 14 wanted to come home. He got into AGSB no problem at 14 and stayed until 18. It really is a lottery, I have a friend who lives across the road from AGSB but her son didn't get in because of his scores being lower. You can apply, but make sure you have a plan b that you are happy with. Lymm high has a very good reputation as I am sure you know.
