Looking for a private secondary school for DS - West Surrey

Any recommendations?

He likes maths, science, chess, etc. bad at sport. Somewhat ASD, always losing his stuff, quite 'sensitive'. He is at a private prep school, Y5, we'd prefer him to leave after Y6 rather than stay on till Y8, as he doesn't have that many friends. Academically very able but his essay writing/English (apart from spelling, which is top class) is poor.

RGS Guildford seemed the most obvious option but I am concerned that they are rather ruthless based on the exam results. Might be wrong with that assessment.

Location somewhat flexible - we'll move in any case, but somewhere accessible from London I guess.

I have known students with ASD go through RGS (including the son of a teacher). If he is bright enough it will probably be fine.

However there is something of a lack boys school in SW Surrey (which is why Duke of Kent is gradually going to 16, The Royal is going to have boys, and St Edmunds ia going to be taking to 16 soon too). You could look at Salesian in Farnborough.

I would also wonder how much his issues stem from him being at the "wrong" for him Prep. I do wonder which one, just because if it was one I know he wouldn't be ther first person I know to have problems there.

We met the head of King Edwards at a schools open evening and he was strikingly different from the attitude of RGS (which came across much more businesslike) - he gave the impression that the school was quite pastoral/nurturing.

One advantage of RGS is that their fees are low for Surrey. So many schools in the area seem to charge over £20k a year which is quite shocking really.

International School of London in Surrey is in Old Woking and they go up to 13 already and are increasing up to 18 and offer IBac if that's something you're interested in, again a small caring school but fees around £17k

King Edwards was originally a sister school to Christ's Hospital which still offers means tested bursaries to all pupils so both come from a different begining to most schools.

I have DDs at The Royal School, and the Boys Senior School opens at the Hindhead site (right by the new A3 tunnel exit, so very handy), in September 2013. Senior fees start at £12,600 a year. The school has been great for my daughters who both love it there, and are doing well academically. Well worth a look..

Tbh if his English isn't up to the same standard as his Maths, he won't get in to RGS - boys there have to be working at top levels all round.

Another option is to move him after year 6 to another prep school for years 7 and 8 - Lanesborough, for example.
