Letts Study Aids??

Hi everyone ... just wondered if anyone could answer a couple of questions for me ... or just give me some guidance :)

My son will be going into Yr 10 in Sept, so it was suggested that I get him some study guides. I have been on the Letts website, and there is just so much to choose from.

Any suggestions on what I should buy for Science and Math? At the moment he's in top set, but not sure how it works for GCSE (though they said he would do OCR 21st Century Science).

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

My DD found the CGP books very useful. She is doing Triple Science and finds the generic CGP books for all 3 Sciences very useful. For maths DD finds doing past papers very useful, plus she has dipped into Youtube for videos on maths topics that she needed further explanation. DD for English Lit finds York notes very useful - you can pick those up very cheaply second hand online - I search using bookbutler.com to find second hand ones.

If your DS is doing Edexcel Geography spec A then give me a shout as DD had some fab revision books published by Hodder.

Wow, there's so much out there.

DS is doing Edexcel Geography, but not sure about spec A?? Sorry to be a thicko, but what is that?

Thanks for the reply :)

Edexcel have two different GCSE Geography exams A or B basically. My DD did the modular course ie 3 exams and a controlled assessment. I've just looked on the Edexcel website to see how the new linear exam which your DS will be doing if he's starting his GCSE in Sept 2012,will be assessed but they are still waiting for acreditation so haven't put much about it on.

The link shows the books DD used for the Geography A course

I would wait till September and then Email the Geography Teacher and ask for their opinion regarding revision books. DD found the ones in the link very useful.

I would be very careful about buying second-hand. The GCSE Science specifications have recently changed - so old books may be out-of-date and contain material that is no longer needed.
I think it's a bit too early to buy revision books when he hasn't started the course yet, but agree that CGP books are good.

I'd really like to thank you all so much for the replies ... it's really helped me out.

magentadreamer, I noticed that you mentioned about Linear and modular?? I was going to get the CGP Math Workbooks (DS has already started some of the GSCE work), but there is an option for linear and modular. As he is starting Yr 10 in sept, will all of the exams he takes be linear?

spendy IMO it would be useful to take your son to WHSmiths or Waterstones and see which revision books he likes. Different publishers set out the information in different ways. Some are very colourful, some have lots of text and some have a mixture of the two. My 2 DCs liked different revision books and at the end of the day their input is important as they have to use them!!
They are usually cheaper on amazon. CGP used to have free postage so you can order them directly. EBay is worth a look too as long as you can be sure that the revision book that you are thinking of buying is still current as crazymum said.
