Writing off an AS subject

Is it ever a good idea? DS is in year 12 doing 4 AS subjects and he is now sure which subject he wants to drop at the end of this year. He did really badly in the January module and has enrolled for a resit in May. But I'm just wondering if it might be sensible to just write this subject off and focus his energies on the 3 subjects he's sure he wants to do to A2. Still do the exams in that subject of course and do some revision, but not waste his time trying to get a good result in a subject he finds hard to the detriment of the others, Would that be silly? Would it backfire when it comes to doing university applications?

Many universities do require an AS in their entry requirements and is normally represented as a lowercase letter, for example A-A-B-b (meaning you need two A's and a B as well as a B at AS). It also depends on how well he is doing in his other subjects. I would suggest asking him to have a word with his subject teacher and form tutor to see what their persective is on it.
