Which authorities in Scotland would you like to teach in?

I'm a PGDE student in the Central Belt.

I am tempted to 'tick the box' and have a year somewhere else, but I would come back to the central belt after the year. And of course I could be sent anywhere, not a beautiful remote island!

It seems that a lot who ticked the box landed up in Fife last year. We also have more probationers than ever from Edinburgh, which with the FRB closing has been a ruddy nightmare.

I've taught in Moray, North Lanarkshire (if that still exists...that's nearly 25 years ago) and now back in Fife. As I tell my probationers every year, the shape of the buildings may change but schools are basically scrolls wherever you are.

Be cautious! If you are secondary have a look at myjobscotland for your subject. Some local authorities only recuit internally. You might think you're signing up for one year but the reality is that getting back to the massively oversubscribed central belt is weighted against you.

A mate of mine ticked the box a few years ago and got... West Lothian! All worked out for the best though as he's still there and is very happy.

Loads of jobs in highland. But as a pp said, it's harder to get back to the central belt if that's where your heart lies. I came up here 12 years ago "until something came up in the central belt" ... Still here...

I think it also depends which subject(s) you teach.

Something like Physics, which is in short supply, you'll have no trouble getting back!

Ds' school has just had to recruit a new Physics teacher and he/she is coming back down to the Central Belt from somewhere in the North.

When 2 (of the 3) Physics teachers were off (for different reasons) it was a nightmare getting supply cover.

If you want to be able to pick your own job and area then become a Home Ec teacher - they are like hen's teeth.
