Songs to recover from a breakup!!

(59 Posts)
overtheraenbow Fri 12-Apr-13 17:21:05

Ok ladies doing a playlist on my new phone and thought what songs have become significant over the last year get me through the breakup and came up with the following;
1) Broken Strings ( James Morrison/Nellie Furtado) At the beginning
2) You Outta Know ( Alanis Morrisette) When I found out about OW
3) I Dreamed a Dream ( Anne Hathaway Les Mis; I went to see the film and this song made me howl!!)
4) If I had a Heart (Andy Burrows)

OK now I feel its time to move to the next phase in the 7 (ie; Shock, denial, anger, isolation, bargaining, depression and acceptance ;albeit with a few wallows back in the previous phases on a bad day)

So, suggestions for Phase 7 please!! and what songs were significant for you in the phases.

Fairylea Fri 12-Apr-13 18:53:06

Actually most script songs... I think I lived my whole relationship through their first album, went through a bad break up on their second (which I ended up buying 4 copies of as it kept getting scratched I played it in the car so much) and now I'm out the other side their 3rd album is more uplifting ! I think he must have been going through things in a similar fashion to me!

AnimatedDad Fri 12-Apr-13 18:58:14

try Tim Minchin's "If I didn't have you... " The funniest love song I've ever heard! Really - I'd recommend it to anyone who needs to get over a relationship:

littletingoddess Fri 12-Apr-13 20:32:27

For the anger bit I recommend a song called 'Die, Ricki, Die' by a band called Mindset. YouTube it. Whoever wrote that song probably had a ton of rage to get rid of.

EugenesAxe Fri 12-Apr-13 20:33:11

A big break-up album of mine (cathartic, sob-inducing vibes) has to be No Need To Argue by the Cranberries.

In particular Twenty-one and Ridiculous Thoughts. Don't really know why. Once I am through the pain and anger, I tend to enter a vaguely maniacal phase, at which points songs like Psycho Killer and Interstellar Overdrive (Pink Floyd), maybe a bit of Smiths too, become good. Also, of course, my Floyd namesake Careful With that Axe Eugene, and the whole of the album The Wall.

Some good rockesque, emotion outpourer numbers might be White Wedding and Hell Is Living Without You (Alice Cooper). Maybe also Spending My Time by Roxette.

juneybean Fri 12-Apr-13 20:36:35

"Don't go breakin' your heart" - it's just that line that came into my head, but it's probably a lot easier said than done.

On the other hand how about "Hallelujah" - the Leonard Cohen version, not any of the covers. Especially "the lonely, the broken Hallelujah".

Reminds me, I've not finished his biog that dh gave me for Christmas. It seems like only yesterday I saw him for the first time at the Floral Pavillion in Southport.

Reader - it was 37 years ago (and I married him).

WildlingPrincess Fri 12-Apr-13 23:18:08

Since you've been gone - Kelly Clarkson
If I was your man - Bruno Mars

ipswichwitch Fri 12-Apr-13 23:55:22

I loved the one Adam Sandler sings in The Wedding Singer - the one that goes:
But it all was buuuuulllllllshit
It's was a goddamn joke
And when I think of you Linda
I hope you fucking choke!!!

I had it on my post break up compilation twice because it just cracks me up every time I hear it grin

dondon33 Sat 13-Apr-13 00:43:45

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger - Kelly Clarkson

^Think you left me broken down
Think that I'd come running back
Baby you don't know me, cause you're dead wrong^

AND

Blow me one last kiss - Pink

^I will do what I please, anything that I want
I will breathe, I won't breathe, I won't worry at all
You will pay for your sins, you'll be sorry my dear
All the lies, all the wise, will be crystal clear^

are my 'fuck you' songs at the moment smile

You thought wrong and Gone -Kelly clarkson

Kelly's helped me through one break up and is currently assisting with another as have The script - The end where I begin, Fall for anything,

My favourite feel good is Sarah mclachlan Silence (delirium) as loud as possible. It depends if you like dance music but I like her voice and words.

^Heaven holds a sense of wonder
and I wanted to believe
that I'd get caught up
when the rage in me subsides^

McAlmont & Butler - Yes: "I feel well enough to tell you what you can do with what you got"... great one to belt out defiantly!

Destinysdaughter Sat 13-Apr-13 08:57:10

A bit old school but, love these...
Enough is Enough, Donna Summer
What have you done for me lately? Janet Jackson
Express yourself, Madonna

I created a spotify playlist after my recent so painful break up called 'I will survive' with many more songs on and I would play it whilst washing up or out walking and it did make me feel more empowered and strong. 3 months later am definitely 90% over it. Yeah..!!!

welcometomysillylife Sat 13-Apr-13 08:59:56
