Um, sit down with him and tell him? Explain the reasons, without resorting to personal insults or critisisms? Be honest?

I know people say that honesty is best but i think for months and months i have just put up and shut up

Meet him somewhere neutral and pluck up the courage to tell him that things aren't working anymore.

It took me months to say it was over but it wasn't as bad as I thought when I actually did it.

reherse a speech. I didn't, it would have been better if I had. learn from my mistakes.

there is a book called something like 'how to have difficutl conversations' which covers everything - no need to buy it, you can just scan the bit you need in Waterstones

Make sure you don't get pulled into a conversation or discussion about maybe/maybe not - first step is to TELL him it is happening and stick to your guns (and do expect him to take it badly - how is he likely to react? tears? anger?). Explaining/discussing come later as different conversations.

it's not easy

it will probably take some time for him to accept it , and even longer to come to terms with it

but make sure you try and stay as calm as possible and not be drawn into a slanging match
