How is it that I am so liberal and reasonable when the rest of my family are such racist, homophobic snobs?

RAAAAAAAAHHHH. Christmas-fuelled brooding!

I will go and distract myself with Casino Royale instead.

sounds like my family . My MIL in particular, she is racist, homophobic & is there a word for people who dislike people bigger than a size 12? (in her words fat ) fattist maybe?? (not that size 12 is big obviously).

My best mate is black and mine & DH's mate is gay and I am a size 14 so it does really uspet the her .

I know how it feels to be in this situation!

I found my life is much better when I have no contact with them

boredandfat, it's called body fascism.

my dm and sd used to be quite vocal about it but they got quieter whenever i called them up on it.

having lost over 2 stone (for no particular reason) in the last 12 months they've stopped saying anything at all - surprise!

mind you sd did say it was nice to see i'd got my waist back

it hasn't occurred to them that i might be ill - even my Dr wanted to do tests which thankfully came back with nothing.

they're big church goers but honestly their constant critisiscm and complaining about people isn't very christian in my book.

my best mate is gay (not right in the eyes of the church tho is it dear? says dm) and i dragged him home for Christmas LOL!

i do find it very wearing but am learning to just not listen as it's just not worth it.

probably a cop out on my part but.......

Sounds like my family. Had to endure a 20 minute tirade from my brother recently against the Welsh!! It was really embarrassing as DH is half-Welsh. They're also very homophobic which is a bit awkward as BIL is gay. The seating plan for our wedding had to be handled very carefully!

I have a friend like this.

She's happy and bright and outgoing, very sociable, wicked sense of humour, kind and thoughtful.

Her family are hermits, who are a bit mad.

I think she may have been switched at birth. There is a family of extroverts somewhere with a trembling, introverted daughter of whom they despair.
