Deep breath - worst date I have ever been on!

I always smile at threads where recount terrible dates, but secretly I always think "how could they have not known he was going to be a wrongun?!" Well, I have just had my comeuppance.

Waited in agreed pub for my date - he didn't show. He came in fifteen minutes late and was quite funny with me for not waiting outside. I'd sent him a text saying precisely where I was sitting but he claimed he didn't get it. Said I should have waited outside so he could have "walked me in." I was already contemplating doing a runner by this point but thought best to stay and give it a try.

Well I have never encountered such a dismal, negative, woe is me attitude in my life. I knew he didn't drive but it also emerges he lives with his mum at age 34 and doesn't work. Gets his money by giving a couple of music lessons a week. He kept talking about getting a job "that suits him."
He asked me a few questions but interrupted my answers straight away with his own anecdotes. He kept kind of giving me weird insulting compliments. "You're not a stupid girl by any stretch of the imagination" being my favourite. Sneered at me for going to bed early and also for not owning my house. (Fucking rich!)

He ordered a huge Sunday meal, even though we'd agreed to a coffee and me, being FUCKING useless, stuck around instead of buggering off because I thought it'd be mean to leave him eating alone.
At the end, I just had to make a quick exit. He announced "I must admit, I'd really like to try your home cooking sometime soon. But it'd be quite a trek to get to yours from mine so you'd have to pick me up if that's ok?"

Finally, to complete the humiliation, on the pavement outside, I knew I he was going to go in for a kiss so I took a step back and he caught my arm and tried to pull me closer to him! I just said a firm "bye" and blundered off feeling a bit shocked.

I really wouldn't have posted this to laugh at someone who was a bit shy or I just didn't feel compatible with, but the rudeness really bloody irritated me.
On the plus side, I stopped off on way home for emergency alcohol and won twenty quid on a scratch card! Aaaaand deep breath!

It never ceases to amaze me that they can appear so 'normal' online or on the phone and then turn out to be completely socially inept!

The money winning aspect has stopped me feeling properly down, I must admit. And I barely spent any money, so no harm done!
I've been on my own for bloody years but recently have found a bit of a confidence surge and decided I want to meet someone. Not going wonderfully so far but inwards and upwards! Grin

oh gosh, you'll laugh in a few days time after a few glasses of wine

I do know of someone who had a relatively positive experience of POF - breif relationship but it didn't last, but ended up as friends iirc.

I always assumed POF was for people just looking for sex - my friend (male) wasn't doing this, but also wasn't looking for the woman to move in and start altering the decor of his home which also serves as his business within the first 6 months Grin

Absolutely Monet! This is tragic, but one of the main reasons I agreed to a date was because in writing he was so articulate and seemed nice! He was just deeply resentful of the world though, but when I kind of tried to discuss anything vaguely political he didn't want to engage.
Oh and he insulted my hometown, which by massive coincidence (as it's 200 mile away) he's visited and had a bad experience in a pub! Grin

Oh dear. He sounds like a knobhead. I've come across quite a few men via OD who live at their parents' in their mid 30s. Immediate turn-off for me.

Worst date I've ever been on (via eharmony): met up for a Thai meal. I had duck, he had chicken. He kept talking about his work project: driving up efficiency in chicken processing plants. He went into quite a lot of detail re: the chicken processing. While he was munching on his chicken.

He wanted a second date but I did not...

Is it me, or are there quite a few people (could be women as well, I guess, but IME men) who go into minute details about the most uninteresting things?

My ex once described the process of artificially inseminating cows (this was his job for a while) in the minutest detail, even down to how to aim the ...er... pointy thing to deposit the load correctly. I could have written a paper on it by the time he'd finished.

Anyway, OP I did a sharp intake of breath at first because I thought you were describing a friend of mine, but he's a bit older.

No, it was worth it:

  • it will be a good pub story in days/years to come;
  • you probably made £15-17 depending on the price of the coffee.

Poor you though!

Worst date EVER was in my early 20s. The bloke took me to the quietest pub in the world. Positioned us near a big screen tv. My back to it, him facing it. Then he watched footie. The whole game. I was stunned into a frozen like state.

Think he said two words to me and he actually "shushed" me when I spoke. Grin
