Partner living in a caravan

Milly101 · 15/02/2014 22:26

My partner of 18 months lives in a touring caravan moving it from site to every 3/4 weeks, any time I've asked him why he lives this way al he ever does is shrugg his shoulders and say " cause I like it " I've seen his invoices/bank statements and he earns in excess of £1000 a week so it's not financial , I just find it very weird. For the record he is lovely in every other way considerate a good listener kind and generous. Would this bother you ?

Yes it would. And I can't even explain why Confused

No, there's a certain freedom in that which I truly envy.

No. I'm jealous. I'd live that way if possible.

I love caravans.
Does he save his money then?

Report

Yes he does save a lot, but he's not tight or miserable with money in fact he doesn't seem to be money orientated at all .

This would be my ideal...

Well that's your answer isn't it? He's not bothered about material things. He's quite happy to just have a roof over his head and isn't fussed about how it looks, etc.

I think lots of us would be happier if we thought that way, tbh.

He sounds an absolute gem- he earns well but is happy and clearly in no way money orientated or materialistic. I'm quite envious

There's plenty of heartbroken threads here from people who have found their partners have developed into strangers due to their constant quest for enough money when there never seems to be a limit on enough.

It sounds like he has his head screwed on. He understands the value of it but it doesn't rule him...its a rare enough combination to find male or female these days as society primes us to chase it like a carrot we will never catch.

Any drug dealers I have met have all been very concerned about money.

It would bother me if I wanted a future with him and he wasn't prepared to live in a house. Living in a caravan wouldn't be something I could do.
Seems like you've found yourself a decent bloke though!

I've never looked at it like that, he is very content, his mother told me over Christmas that he could afford to buy a house outright and that just makes it all a bit more strange

I've thought about living like that, it sounds great, two blokes at my last company lived (separately!) like that. No council tax for starters.

I guess it is out of the norm, but it sounds like he is doing ok?

Perhaps he just likes a change of scenery.

I love our caravan. Don't know if I want to live in it permanently.

teaandthorazine · 15/02/2014 22:45

Maybe he just doesn't want to own a house? Maybe he's saving his money so he can buy a yacht outright and spending the rest of his life sailing around the Caribbean? Grin

Dp quite frequently expresses a wish to live in a (static) caravan. I refuse on the grounds that they always have unpleasant upholstery.

I'd quite like to buy one of those massive RVs and spend my life moving from place to place.

No. When I met my DH he lived in a van.

Some friends still do and have a nice life.

Seeing your latest post I could buy a house for cash easily but won't because I think house prices are in a bubble and are on the verge of collapsing, so I rent as I don't want to throw £200k down the drain.

It would bother me a lot. Really, after a year and a half all the insight you have about his chosen lifestyle is the he 'likes it'? That strikes me as bizarre. Surely when he first told you he lives in a touring caravan you had some kind of conversation about it?

If you can see yourself living like this then great, but if like me you can't think of anything worse then best find out where you both stand re the future of your relationship.

What sort of van is it? Because I'm having some images of grotty tiny 70s caravan, and other images of a shiny Bailey Pageant or something like that Grin

But no, it probably wouldn't bother me - sounds like an amazing lifestyle!

It's a top of the range van fixed double bed and separate bedroom it is a lovely van, I don't ever see myself moving into it and I'm not sure if ever sees himself moving out of it and there lies the problem

That wouldn't bother me, but I don't mind a bit of eccentricity.

Does living together mean a lot to you.
