oh bollux.
So, what do we do when we find out? What are first steps?

crazynanna Tue 27-Sep-11 15:51:54

Oh Riven I am sorry sad

Riveninabingle Tue 27-Sep-11 15:55:32

He is not happy. The chances of getting another job with a company that will allow him to work part ti e and are understanding of the Caring issues (so emergency time off when carers dont come or dd is rushed to hospital) is zero. And he is 45.
We will survive but need to set out a plan. The house is mortgaged and also adapted for dd so we cant lose it. Thats the first worry. The motability car will have to go.
Argh.
Im a bit of a planner for expecting the worst so just after what we should do as soon as we hear.

PeachyWhoCannotType Tue 27-Sep-11 15:55:43

Hugs.

What are the chances of the writing picking up the slack? presumable he can declare those hours to WTC and that will then keep you at elast to an extent- I cn't see that it's that dissimilar to DH working for himself and that has seen us through so far.

I bet he's devastated isn't he? I know how much he loves that job. Tell him we're sorry.

Practically you need to know if you can make mortgage repayments still and if not talk to someone about your next steps, or if you ahve appropriate insurnace speak to them about making a claim.

Riveninabingle Tue 27-Sep-11 15:57:50

No idea. Writing doesnt pay much plus it took ten years to get that book published.
No insurance naturally.
I assume its JSA (or do Carers go on income support?), CTB and ctc?

SpringHeeledJack Tue 27-Sep-11 16:01:47

shittington

sad

this happened to dp earlier this year and things looked v v bleak...he did find work after a relatively short time, so might not be as bad as it looks

hope so

Riveninabingle Tue 27-Sep-11 16:04:29

He is very specialised in very small pure research field. Ho hum
Thank fuck we bought all the coal already.
Plus <whisper> i will be driven batty by him hanging round the house all day. I love being alone in the house!

SpringHeeledJack Tue 27-Sep-11 16:06:54

we actually <whispers> quite liked it

after I had got used to him shadowing me CONSTANTLY along with the dogs/kids

Riveninabingle Tue 27-Sep-11 16:08:06

<whisper> shagging? grin

SpringHeeledJack Tue 27-Sep-11 16:11:06

grin

I had to hide round at a friend's house a couple of times- the third time I stepped backwards during course of the Today Programme and he was there AGAIN

...actually I can't help at all with this. It's all coming back to me

wink

TheReturnoftheSmartArse Tue 27-Sep-11 16:16:33

Riven, I am SO sorry. We've been through this 3 times now and it is unbelievably stressful, without all the extra heartaches you have.

I'm afraid I don't really have any advice, other than look after yourself as well as your DH - being selfish, I got fed up with people asking how DH was bearing up, when I rather felt I was suffering too! But what I mean is, you need to look after yourself so that you can look after everyone else, because so many people rely on you.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen to you all.

Riveninabingle Tue 27-Sep-11 16:43:02

Well, at least ill get that flat sceen TV, nike trainers and 5 foreign holidays a year the DM is always banging on about wink

SpringHeeledJack Tue 27-Sep-11 19:40:16

bumping for evening peoples

...even without the extra difficulties your family has to cope with, it's a hard hard thing to face

I hope you can get some helpful benefit advice, esp for mortgage relief and so on

TheReturnoftheSmartArse Thu 29-Sep-11 10:06:54

How are you feeling today, Riven?

Ben10WasTheSpawnNowWeLoveLego Thu 29-Sep-11 10:30:48

Hi Riven

This may help in relation to the mortgage payment.

Hope this sorts itself out and he doesn't get made redundant. However I believe that he may be able to claim income support as a carer. You can run the figures through here

Riveninabingle Thu 29-Sep-11 10:32:55

I'm actually fine. DH is finally talking about it. He says if its not this year then it will definately be next year as BAe i closing its pure research dept. So 55 are going this year, the remaining 30 will finish the projects.
So he is agonising cos they are offering 2 weeks pay for every year served if you volunteer rather than the one week for each year if you are made redundant. He's only been there 7 years but it is the difference between£4200 and £2100 redundancy pay. But then if he gets to stay another 6 months thats more. But they wont release the names until November.
We have worked out a plan though. Send back the mobility car and suck up the fine. Use the DLA saved (200 a month) plus redundancy (you can see why that extra 2000 is important if he goes voluntarily) to pay the mortgage for the 9 months until mortgage interest relief kicks in.
Although someone said Carers arent bound by that 9 months? The CAB has closed so I cant find out.
While ds2 is at home we can manage on CTC and JSA/IS. DH will look for work but he reckons his chances are very remote. Its easier to go part time because of Caring once you work somewhere than go to an interview with that need. We cant move house cos of the adaptations already done (for starters we'd have to pay the council back the entire cost if we move before 2014. Thats 50K)
So short term we will survive. Long term I dont know. Hes only 45 and thats both too young to stop work and he loves his job, but too old for many companies. In science they want youngsters as its thought they have the fresh ideas (complete nonsense)
I really wish he wasnt so specialised but there are two universities and its worth trying for a contract with one. Its all temp contracts now. I've also said he could do personal tutoring for A level and STEP and Oxbridge in physics and maths.
But short term I think we will be ok although without a car which is a bit of a pain. But its not like we are alone watching the news and the massive redundancies sad BAe is losing 3000 staff. All specialists. Where the fark are they going to find work?

Ben10WasTheSpawnNowWeLoveLego Thu 29-Sep-11 10:39:44

Riven, it is only 13 weeks now for mortgage interest relief for anyone. THere is not a two year limit on claiming if you are claiming income support which would cover you.

Riveninabingle Thu 29-Sep-11 10:46:09

thanks for that.
I just hope for dh's sake he finds something. He needs to work and enjoys working at the sharp end of research. And he has never ever pointed out its my fault that he had to work part time and act as main Carer to dd cos of my own uselessness. But I feel it sad

Ben10WasTheSpawnNowWeLoveLego Thu 29-Sep-11 10:51:55

That is because he is a good man, It is not your fault that you are not able to be the main carer.

Can you go interest only if you aren't already as that will reduce the monthly payment. I work for a lender when I am not off sick so know quite a lot about it.

PeachyWhoCannotType Thu 29-Sep-11 12:24:48

Riv the whole BAe thing si awful isn;t it? A completely different level I know but DH's university runs a degree that specialises in preparing people for BAE roles- they even have their own plane hanger- and he said they were all shock yesterday, and wondering fi they should even bother completing their last year!

Also agree that universities would be the best palce for your DH to start looking.

And yes Carers get IS plus they lose CA and get a £10 carer's premium instead, which is truly crap. I don;t suppose he could add the writing he does to some consultancy work? 16 hours and he gets back on tax credits. trust me that makes all the difference- particualrly to one's sanity!

Luckily DH mainly sods off upstairs to work and / or research work / program strange desk things with information I can;t understand so he is not always under my feet. When he was I was losing it.

Riveninabingle Thu 29-Sep-11 13:07:37

Isnt WTC now 24 hours?

PeachyWhoCannotType Thu 29-Sep-11 17:20:50

Not yet, 2013 that comes in. Luckily after Dh graduates.

Betelguese Sun 09-Oct-11 21:09:17

Riven hug

Sorry to hear, that. This is the age when they f* employees sad with temporary contracts; my dh had loads of that
