Yes - it is unfortunately normal. If you were made redundant you would normally get a payment for redundancy (tax-free) + either work your notice period or be paid in lieu of it. Depending on the wording of your contract, pay in lieu of notice is taxable. Hope your health starts improving soon.
Sorry to hear that Sam. Me too, ggrrr to them, tax off the full lot.
I've just lost my job through ill health and that's exactly what they did, paid me in lieu of notice.
Is it normal to be paid 'in lieu of notice' rather than as redundancy?
