Dead or another ambridge coma special?

So...what do we think?...

GreenShadow Fri 19-Apr-13 19:30:45

Already heard the news, despite not listening in at 7.00 - Twitter was full of it! How long before it's up on iPlayer?

But back to your question - the timing fits in well with Brenda moving out - she can move in with Vicky and they can raise the baby between them.

Rangirl Fri 19-Apr-13 21:20:53

Is it not Neil ?

R4 Fri 19-Apr-13 22:37:00

Yup. The gun was shot in the direction of Neil and/or Darrell. Nothing to do with Moike.

And there was I thinking that Neil has come on in leaps and bounds in recent months - he is in danger of nicking David's place as village Good Guy. He is acting like a wise Elder, was reliable in a crisis and is generally 'solid'. I hope the SW don't have a nasty outcome penciled in for him.sad On the bright side, I suppose that it's more bad news for that odious twerp Tom.

gwenniebee Fri 19-Apr-13 22:41:13

It was a gun shot? shock I thought he was hit by the car. I hope they don't finish him off. It's become all too much Eastenders for me since that new editor took over - I was brought up in Archers country and I was quite happy when nothing really happened, it reminded me of home!

seeker Fri 19-Apr-13 22:46:51

Gunshot. But it will be another Archers medical event, like Jazzer's miraculously healed brain damage, Brian's vanishing epilepsy, the three complete recoveries from comas, Abi's problem free happily brqstfeeding prematurity, Beth's milestone hitting Down's syndrome and Wolfgang's vanishing TB.

LondonMother Sat 20-Apr-13 08:53:33

Not happy about this. Neil is one of the very few really nice people in Ambridge. I suppose that makes him expendable, like Nigel. I wouldn't have cared much if they'd got rid of Darrell, but I suppose they know that. I'd be over the moon if they got rid of Paul as that storyline is soooooooo boring unless there's some amazing twist coming.

Anyone else wonder if Matt was maybe at the dogfight?

R4 Sat 20-Apr-13 11:06:19

Not happy about this. Neil is one of the very few really nice people in Ambridge. I suppose that makes him expendable, like Nigel.

My thoughts exactly.sad I also wondered if Matt was in attendance.

When VW did an interview the other day about leaving TA, she mentioned that the SW considered doing a murder storyline but it was veto'd by The Powers Above. I'm pinning my hopes on this. In fact, I'm hoping that it was a totally wild shot that didn't actually hit anyone. It was, after all, in a field, at a distance, in the dark.hmm

EverybodysSootyEyed Sat 20-Apr-13 11:11:20

I can't bear to listen anymore and just read the synopsis so that I can be amazed at how overly dramatic it has become

My guess wih baby Beth is that she disappears from the radio from about 1yr and then reappears at 14 with no sign of downs and becomes a stroppy teenager a la pip

Although the way it is going I'm not sure it's still going to be on in 14 years

There are so many stories that they start and then nothing comes of it.

I'm expecting Paul's surprise to be his ex wife tied up in the flat ready for his crazed revenge

GreenShadow Sat 20-Apr-13 11:11:59

Sorry - total brain fade in my post yesterday.... I am a regular listener, honestly - just get Neil and Mike muddled sometimes.

TheConstantLurker Sat 20-Apr-13 11:20:58

Omg just listened on iplayer. Exactly the same thoughts: not another death/coma/serious hospital situation. Darrell is such a prat!
Anyway can't wait for the next episode so I guess that was the aim.

ppeatfruit Sun 21-Apr-13 11:29:52

Nooooo they better not kill off Neil shock You know the good guy involved in village matters etc.... it could happen I'm effing annoyed.... this is ridiculous coming so soon after Chris

Spuderoonerism Sun 21-Apr-13 12:04:31

Was going to put this on the other thread but that seems a bit more spoiler free so am sticking it here instead:

Definitely agree that The Archers is not supposed to be Corrie or Eastenders or anything like that and I will not be happy if they continue down that route. That said it's a great dramatic twist have the son almost killed, then just when it's all done and dusted off the father in a 'didn't see that coming' type way...the trouble is I don't want that from The Archers; it's not why I listen <pouts>

Darrell just irritates me beyond belief. I quite liked it when they introduced Elona and made it clear that it wasn't a DailyMailSpecial 'all them Eastern Europeans coming over here being scrounging criminals' but Darrell and the daughters are just loathsome.

I fear it doesn't look good for Neil, it would tie in nicely with Nic being pregnant as well - all the attention can be on Emma instead as she'll have lost her dad...

ppeatfruit Sun 21-Apr-13 12:20:05

I fear you're right spuder sad agree about dopey Darryl and sort of nice Elona too. It's not what I listen for either.

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 21-Apr-13 14:36:38

HearMyRoar Sun 21-Apr-13 16:30:38

Poor Neil, I hope darryl feels so guilty he tops himself or something. He's such a prat.

I agree, I liked the archers when the most exciting thing that happened all week was a cow getting a sore leg. Can't be doing with all the action.

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 21-Apr-13 17:02:58

but surely the villain Des won't get away?
Do we think Neil is dead?!?!

seeker Sun 21-Apr-13 20:11:33

So now we can add "being shot in the shoulder" to the catalogue of illnesses, injuries and conditions that people in Ambridge seem to be able to shake off in hours with no after effects!

seeker Sun 21-Apr-13 20:12:13

Oh shit- sorry if that was a spoiler...............sad

TheConstantLurker Sun 21-Apr-13 22:27:58

Also we've had somebody else telling the law about illegal activity and dramatic denouements ensuing before. It is getting too eastenders.
Where the hell are Linda and the llamas?

seeker Sun 21-Apr-13 23:13:31

And did Wolfgang die of TB?

ppeatfruit Mon 22-Apr-13 07:10:32

Go on spoil it tell me or do we have another cliff hanger? I noticed that lately Susan has been AWOL.

So its not just me that has been wondering if all of Lindy's llamas have had to be put down?

R4 Mon 22-Apr-13 08:43:24

I'm guessing that they had a story mapped out about Lindy's llamas and Ed being trained up to go badger culling ... and then the Government cancelled the plan so they had to abort mid-story. (I'm a bit confused: I think they cancelled in the south midlands but it's still going ahead in the south west. Is that right?)

Do you want to hear Celia's husband's song: badger badger badger

Spuderoonerism Mon 22-Apr-13 08:53:55

Urgh, just listened to yesterday's episode... can't see Neil dying of his 'flesh wound' (although I did have a brief chuckle imagining his torso hopping around whilst Susan flaps in the background) so it's all going to be about DarrellTheWimp... I'm also very very bored of Tom and Brenda already.

And yes dammit I want to know if Wolfgang died of TB or not!

How do we think Pip is going to get rumbled for her big day out in London; it was just a day trip wasn't it given the cover story was she was revising in the library so she must be back by now?

HomelessAngua Mon 22-Apr-13 09:19:58

Is it me or is th show getting even sillier?

ppeatfruit Mon 22-Apr-13 09:30:40

HomelessAngua No it's not just you ,it's annoying me too and a few others (i'm guessing here but I do get that feeling) Sadly I'm still effing listening!!!! It's an addiction grin

Spuderoonerism Mon 22-Apr-13 10:24:37

Definitely not just you, if I didn't have 90 mins in the day in the car Monday to Friday then I'd probably give up on it...I stick with it because the podcasts pass the time quite nicely.

Kiriwawa Mon 22-Apr-13 10:35:29

I now listen because it's my cue to put DS to bed.

Yes, what did happen with Pip? She called from the 'library' and then that was the end of it.

The Darryl/Neil friendship is ludicrous. The only medical condition that ever has had a longterm impact (in that the SW have mentioned it more than once) is Lizzie's bloody heart condition.

Talking of Lizzie, I think she's behaving outrageously with Ifty.

ppeatfruit Mon 22-Apr-13 10:51:00

Kiriwawa Well Pip obviously went to London and rang again from there to say she'd just 'popped out' to get a coffee.Dave sort of suspects something but Ruth is hoodwinked . This'll probably get her chucked out of home IMO.

Lilymaid Mon 22-Apr-13 10:53:16

"The only medical condition that ever has had a longterm impact" - don't forget Joe's farmers lung (cough cough).

R4 Mon 22-Apr-13 10:57:08

And Lynda's allergies <sniff, sniff, achooo>

Kiriwawa Mon 22-Apr-13 11:14:32

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about Lynda, given as we haven't had summer in so long and Joe only gets wheeled out for cider club grin

I hope Pip gets kicked out - I'm bored stupid by her and her whiny voice. I thought Spencer was supposed to be a good upstanding farmer's son but he seems a bit wet and feckless

R4 Mon 22-Apr-13 11:24:05

Didn't Pip go round to Spencer's after she got the phone call from Head of Ag? He knows the score so I don't know why he agreed to the London jolly.

ppeatfruit Mon 22-Apr-13 11:34:15

It's the actress who plays Pip she's terrible! You'd think she'd have improved by now.
I must have missed the call from her Head of Ag. Did we hear it? Or was it just referred to?

R4 Mon 22-Apr-13 11:44:14

IIRC, HofA called the landline at Brookfield during the Easter hols and David picked up. I think that Pip disappeared upstairs to take the call (which we heard: buck up or you're out) but the Dopeys managed to work out that something was up. Tried to grill her so she fled to bf for the day, cos he would be more understanding.
David was in cross mode, Ruth in mumsy-hoping-for-the-best mode. And so it has continued - two extreme reactions, neither of which seem to help.

ppeatfruit Mon 22-Apr-13 11:58:14

Thanks R4. IMO TA SW's love a wayward DC at school or college; in RL a lot of colleges and schools are not worth worrying about, after all Leonardo Da Vinci never stepped across the threshold of a school grin Can you tell i'm a child of the 60s? There isn't a DC in HE in TA is there? Forgive all the acronyms!!

PrincessFiorimonde Mon 22-Apr-13 12:40:30

Alice was a blameless student though, I think. Didn't she get a first? Although much use it seems to be to her, as she has a job she hates (though I bet she gets given more interesting stuff now her boss knows she was offered another job). And isn't Daniel off to uni this autumn?

Racking my brains to think who might be TA's candidate for the next Leonardo da Vinci!

seeker Mon 22-Apr-13 12:42:25

Alice wasn't blameless on 4Extra!

R4 Mon 22-Apr-13 12:50:18

Dunno about AmEx but Alice had her rebellious moment at sixth form. Didn't she put her foot down and refuse to carry on with her naice private school in favour of a State 6F college.

Oh I like Tom with a broken heart better than Tom with a sausage.

I too muddle Neil and mike. How did Neil spawn all that is evil - Emma?

ppeatfruit Mon 22-Apr-13 13:08:50

Me too Thisisa He's much more human I bet Bren is wondering why she's ditching him now!!

LondonMother Mon 22-Apr-13 14:58:59

Alice got a 2.1 Can't remember what she got in her Master's, assuming we were told.

She did put her foot down about transferring from St Margaret's to Borchester FE (where Brian said the students probably didn't have opposable thumbs) because she couldn't do all the subjects she wanted at St Mag's. She got stellar A level grades, so yah boo to you, Brian!

TheOriginalSteamingNit Mon 22-Apr-13 15:01:53

And because Amy was going there, wasn't it? Brarn was cross, but then private education didn't do a lot for Kate, did it?

LondonMother Mon 22-Apr-13 15:29:18

Oh yes... or Debbie, for that matter, given she dropped out of Exeter in the second year. Adam stayed the course and got a 2.1 from Newcastle.

<useless trivia geek>

EverybodysSootyEyed Mon 22-Apr-13 15:37:22

Didn't Alice get into some sort of trouble which led to her and Chris ending up in debt?

ppeatfruit Mon 22-Apr-13 15:49:05

Yes she caught up with some yuh type fraudster\drug dealer or something and 'loaned' him some money didn't she?

PrincessFiorimonde Mon 22-Apr-13 16:40:45

OK, guess I should've said 'relatively blameless' (in comparison with the dreadful Pip) grin.

Don't know about the debt thing as I don't listen to AmEx.

Spuderoonerism Tue 23-Apr-13 07:55:44

The AmEx / Alice plot was the utterly implausible 'Chaz' one of her housemates during her Masters who was a terribly 'rah' student and also apparently a dodgy payday loans chap (funded by some terribly rich city types who had promised him a job as kneecapper in chief when he graduated).

Chaz offered to lend Chris the money to buy the business but before they could do it Chaz was beaten up. I think he also somewhere in the series developed a huge crush on Alice and when he decided he needed to get away from Captain Wonga his evil overlord, he bought them Eurostar tickets to run away together...

or something like that...

R4 Tue 23-Apr-13 08:26:11

Yeah. That is so like your typical student's life.hmm
That is why I never bothered with AmEx. The trouble is that the over-the-top, unbelievable storylines are now cropping up in TA, too, with alarming frequency.

ppeatfruit Tue 23-Apr-13 08:50:10

And as you can tell R4 we 'got' the story clearly !!!grin clear as mud!

TheConstantLurker Tue 23-Apr-13 09:55:16

Looks like Pip might go and live elsewhere. Good riddance I say.

TheConstantLurker Tue 23-Apr-13 09:57:30

Oh and I am seeing Des turning up and threatening Elona and the children. Darrell will run around like a chicken with it's head chopped off and hopefully Elona will knock both of them unconscious with a frying pan.

ppeatfruit Tue 23-Apr-13 11:29:44

Fillyjonk75 Tue 23-Apr-13 11:40:50

I have listened off and on for a few years, it's the only soap I even vaguely follow and it does make me laugh how, whenever there is a dramatic plot, the traditional listeners are all up in arms and OH MY GOD SOMETHING IS HAPPENING!

What I do find difficult with TA is pinning down all the characters. Being quite a visual person quite often I don't know who is speaking in several scenes which makes it difficult, especially for the sporadic listener who also listens while they are trying to do something else at the same time. I used to get loads of characters' voices mixed up as well which made it especially confusing.

Fillyjonk75 Tue 23-Apr-13 14:14:11

I missed the last part but didn't really get why David and Ruth were so worried about whether Pip was studying or going to the cinema. My parents hadn't a clue what I was up to while I was at uni. Thank God.

Songbird Tue 23-Apr-13 14:38:53

The usual problem - she ducked out of helping with the lambs, saying she had to cram in the library to prepare for this placement interview. As soon as she hung up from an understanding David?Ruth? she rang Spencer to say 'London here we come'. Little shit.

Kiriwawa Tue 23-Apr-13 16:47:06

She gets board and lodgings (and a car?) on the basis that she helps out on the farm. But she's done naff all of late and some lambs died because of her negligence

She deserves to have her arse kicked off the farm (and off TA because I can't bear her whining Oh mu-uuuuuuum/da-aaaaaaaad for a moment longer)

Filly - who do you get confused between? grin

IloveJudgeJudy Sun 28-Apr-13 22:38:16

Fillyjonk I have been listening to the Archers in a quite dedicated fashion for the past about 2 or 3 years and I still don't get who all the characters are, who they're related to, etc. I find some of the voices very difficult to distinguish.

I am finding some of the recent storylines quite annoying. I find Darrell very annoying and spineless. I don't like the way some storylines are signposted and then just disappear. Pip is really doing my head in. The only upside is that DS1 is 18 and sometimes catches parts of TA. The Pip storyline has meant that we've had some quite interesting discussions about responsibility/rights and parents/DC, etc.
