I mean, if I had a cock, this programme would make me want to slam it in the door.

it's one of those truly appalling R4 comedies that I can't imagine anyone in their right mind finding amusing

there have been worse ones though

Yes - awful! In fact I nearly started a thread about this the other day [saddo]

It is just crapulously unfunny. Even worse than Hut 39 or whatever it's called.

The audience screams with laughter as well. There must be big men in the studio with guns.

Worse R4 comedies... ooh, now there's a rich seam. There's one at the moment with some Welsh bloke maundering on in a not-amusing manner. Not sure he's worse than Strong though.

The only one I find worth listening to is The Now Show, and even that is very hit-and-miss.

i vaguely remember one about a bloke with various lodgers in his house
some of them were foreign so obviously had comedy foreign accents which induced gales of laughter from the audience...
think it was all voiced by the same bloke

god it was awful
would be breastfeeding dd in the evening and listening to the news then this tripe would come on and I'd be trapped listening to it and gnashing my teeth

Oh yes, I like the Now Show. I especially like it when Marcus Brigstocke gets angry.

News Quiz I like, although I still miss Barry Took (how ancient does that make me?).

Dreadful, i thought it was an English sense of humour thing that I just didn't get. glad to see I am not that out of touch.

Love Now Show and News quiz. Love the one about the grumpy writer. i can't remember the name but it is very funny.

lol Carm, I was thinking the same.

I'm struggling with reception on radio 4 anyway today, so I think I'll just switch it off.

That grumpy writer one is interesting, because I don't particularly like it myself, but I can see that it is well-written and put-together. Whereas with Strong, as Cat says, I just cannot imagine why people find it funny.

HI Tnog lol at the Irish R4 reception. I used to listen to R4 when I lived over there weather permitting

What's the grumpy writer one? I have to admit I have smirked now and again at the newsagent's one, although it's not great. But News Quiz and Now Show are the only ones that have the ability to actually make me laugh, which I believe is the point of comedy...

Ed Reardon's week, is that the grumpy writer one?

(Eeek at my apostrophe. Apologies.)

Yes! Ed Reardon, I think that is very well observed.
I don't hate the newsagent one, don't love it but it can be mildly amusing.

'But News Quiz and Now Show are the only ones that have the ability to actually make me laugh, which I believe is the point of comedy' - good point snaf.

Yes, Ed Reardon, that's it.

What is the newsagent one?

There was a Josie Lawrence/improv thing recently that I took grace exception to. But then 'Josie', 'Lawrence' and 'improv' are not words that should appear in the same language IMO.

yes agree CAS is truly dreadful. the programme with the lodgers and the "hilarious" foreign accents - was that about Mervyn Jones or somebody terribly unfunny, with every gag signposted from about a million miles away before it landed with a dull thud?

Quote Unquote gets a nul points from me too.

Yes the Josie Lawrence one was dire. What about the one with the woman who was asocial worker, or the one with the arms dealer. social worker one was mildly more amusing than arms dealer one which was shit.
Can you tell that i spend the hours between 6 and 7.15 in the kitchen listening to r4?

I know the newsagent one you're on about, but can't remember its name. I thought it was rubbish from small snippets before turning it off, but on a long drive with nothing else to do, ended up listening to an entire episode and found myself laughing out loud (it was the one about the woman about to finish her build the titanic magazine thingy).

God, Josie Lawrence
