What the hell happened today? Is the curate a bit iffy?

I was distracted during yesterday's and haven't heard today's yet. Will iPlay and return!

Though I think the last I heard of a curate (ages ago) was when he was having an affair with someone. May have misremembered.

So ... The curate. What on earth?Shock

Thing is, I just don't listen regularly enough. Haven't really noticed him in this series - is this something leading on from earlier in the year? Very strange - but it looked as if he wasn't willing to blackmail the poor boy who killed his brother. (I did hear that!)

I do so love Esme.

Well you were right, Gruach ! I don't listen till the evening. People have a tendency of going missing on Home Front and their whereabouts unknown,, don't they? Kitty, Sam, Adam, Dieter and now Christine have all gone AWOL and no-one knows whats happened till they turn up at some point. I hope Christine has made it out of the fire (and Dieter for that matter). Another engagement broken too!

Another story I hadn't really followed. Dorothea and Ralph's baby. Did they do away with it?

Dorothea is - partly - Indian?

Goodness. Shock

The baby died - can't remember if there was some suggestion he was neglected by Dorothea.

Thanks! All sorts of stuff I hadn't heard about before in this omnibus.

It's so lovely. And shocking.

Am a bit confused, has there been a big jump after the fire to the new series or have I missed a lot?

Fire?ShockConfusedGrin

I missed most of the last series I think. This one seems to join up to a few things I remember from past series.

GC79 The last series was set in Devon. The others (I think but am not certain) like the current one have been set in Folkestone. There were a few common links in Devon to the characters in Folkestone. The Grahams had a sister down there which led them to go and visit and Isabel and Johnny went too. Adam had run away to a farm in the neighbourhood in search of Dieter, and Kitty travelled down here to find him and stayed with him on the farm where he was working with Dieter for a while. We don't know what happened to Dieter after the fire but Kitty and Adam came back to Folkestone.

The last series in Devon ended with a dramatic fire in a barn, Gruach. One old farm worker died, but Dieter was inside and no trace of him was found, hence Kitty not knowing if he had made his escape, as he was living under false papers, and would not want to be caught by the authorities, or was killed in the fire. With her being pregnant now she is pretty desperate to find him if he is still alive!

Thank you! Who is Christine/Christina please? Only found Home Front last season. Need to listen to early ones somehow!

Christine is a Belgian refugee who appeared the series before the Devon one. She was living in Folkestone with an abusive Belgian café owner, I don't think he was a relative. Isabel found her there and took her away. I think there was some kind of accident too involving her but can't quite remember. She quickly bonded to Isabel but was put in an orphanage and hated it there, she is a pretty assertive character! Isabel went to check on her and took her away again, but decided it would be too much for her to look after Christine herself so she farmed her out to live with the fake medium Dolly Clout. Christine has been helping Dolly with her cleaning work. Hope this is making sense!

Trying to remember - did Isabel get a car/van for war work and then knock Christine off her bike?

I was reminded of it when the little boy was knocked down by a car earlier in this current series.

cherry I don't think I remember any suggestion of neglect when Dorothea's baby died. I think it was SIDS. It was quite upsetting.

There was also a series of it last year that was set up on Tyneside: that's where Johnny Marshall was introduced, and some other current characters as well.

Are we still listening? Can anyone tell me why that horrible Miss Read has got it in for the Lowthers? Why is she trying to get her back off the wagon? I almost can't bear to listen when it is either of the Reads, they are both so repellent.

Report

Miss Read (Reed/Reid?!) has got it in for the Lowthers because she wants to ingratiate herself with the Marshalls, the factory owners, and she heard that Mr Lowther, the factory manager, had gone to them with reports about the factory explosion saying the public needed to be told it wasn't the workers own faults and then with evidence implicating the Marshalls having caused the accident (albeit not intentionally - they had left sacks near a kitchen stove that had sparks out of it). I think the Reads are putting it about the explosion was caused by a German infiltrator so that's another reason they have it in for the Lowthers, principally Alan Lowther. Iris Read wants to get at him through the weak spot of his sister's alcoholism. I agree they are vile characters!
