I am sorry but I don't like new Clarrie.

All this stuff over the flowers, the Saint whatshername, Nic's brainwashing conversion to Christianity - and a bit of blatant envy and sneakiness thrown in - it's just NOT HER!!

I could handle a new person playing the character (just) but to totally transplant her personality is too much!

Agree, it's not her at all. Even if everyone says it's the old Clarrie from 20 yrs ago or whatever. Clarrie was always diffident, loving, respectful, courteous. This one is conniving, selfish, almost downright aggressive. And her voice grates.

She sounds too much like Pam Ayres for my liking

Agree, emsie

What lljkk said. She was always such a comforting presence. This unpleasantness isn't her at all. Sad

Totally agree!

I agree, it doesn't ring true at all

Ooh me too! She's driving me mad. This nonsense about the bloody flower arranging stuff. Gah.

Report
TallGiraffe · 16/06/2013 08:14

No way would the real Clarrie stand there and hero worship one DIL while making the other feel rubbish Sad

Somethingyesterday · 16/06/2013 11:39

Oh wow! I'm so glad it's not just me. I've been feeling vaguely over the last week that her character is just not ringing true anymore. Apart from all the qualities mentioned above Clarrie was always full of humour and a great peacemaker. If she ever had the TIME for anything like this she would only be competing for fun, and she would want everyone else to have fun too. She would NEVER be instrumental in setting two members of her family against one another. It's all wrong.

You're right Something the Real Clarrie would only ever be competing for fun and no way would she be getting nastily competitive like she is now.

Where do we complain? It's really unpleasant!

It's all part of the underlying "let's all laugh at the yokels" theme that has always been there.

I occasionally listen to Archers, but you're all right its not Clarrie,
the writers are paying no attention to her past character, and I had to keep reminding myself that the nasty person, irrespective of the new voice, was indeed Clarrie. Can we please have the old Clarrie persona back please?

I agree with curlew, it's part of this horrible setting up of the Grundys as the 'rude mechanicals' of the Archers. Clarrie used to be a three dimensional, humane working woman balancing a difficult family situation with tremendous grace. I don't recognise this caricature at all. It actually makes me quite Angry.

Exactly emsiewill!! I really want to like her. I'm a bit irritated by Jazzer in all of that flower palava...Just waiting for that new bloke at the Megadairy to roll in the hay with Helen and cheer things up ;-)

Report
emsiewill · 18/06/2013 14:23

I've said it before somewhere else, but I really hate the way she talks in "local dialect". Can't think of any actual examples, but things like "it baint right, be it?" (rubbish example, but yswim). Clarrie never used to do this.

Report
Saker · 18/06/2013 15:40

Also the old Clarrie would have seen straight through Jazzer - after all she's had enough experience of that sort of malarkey with Eddy and Joe.

Report
Somethingyesterday · 18/06/2013 17:14

True. Having to listen to her being "taken in" rather makes me feel that I also am being taken for a fool.

Report
HomelessAngua · 19/06/2013 09:50

She is very very irritating.

Lomaamina · 24/06/2013 20:42

Agree. And this storyline with the flower arrangements is totally OTT. I cannot believe that the sensible Clarrie would spend and apparent fortune on a water feature to outclass the competition; not just out of a sense of fairness, but also because they're meant to be living from hand to mouth. This ridiculous recruitment of Jazzer to do the spying is just plain daft. And would the village really have bought into a flower arranging competition? Really? All the various clubs? I'm happy to suspend reality, but this is beyond belief.

But then the finances of the Archers are in a parallel universe. How are Tiger and Pusscat funding their holiday? For that matter, they seem to pop out for a meal every other day practically.

so Grin to know you all feel the same! im really tempted to turn off the radio every time this new clarrie comes on.

Really don't like her one bit - the voice is very annoying and she seems to have lost a few iq points

IndridCold · 30/06/2013 18:21

Just listened to the omnibus and totally agree with everyone. They've turned her into a totally different character.

The one thing about Clarrie was that she wasn't stupid. This woman is a complete ninny!

I've been ambivalent about the Archers since Nigel's death (and so has my mum - an Archers fan of 40 years' standing!). This Clarrie thing is just the latest (but perhaps most heinous) example of the same problem.
Why do they have to do this? Why, why? Why can't they stick with what works, why try to change it and make it worse?

Report
duchesse · 01/07/2013 16:58

OP, neither do I. She's has a personality change along with the voice change. She's just annoying and a bit whiny, this one.

Lomaamina,
Lilian is a millionaire, thanks to her rich dead husband. Amside is really just a device to give Matt some self-worth.
