hi , does anyone know if it wud be ok to use a pram or buggie for a baby who exceeds the maximum user capacity/load weight? my son is only 6month old but weighs 12.3kg! the maximum user weight is 15kg for most prams n buggies. don't know whether to look into buyin yet another pram with a higher weight capacity or not!

It just means they are safety tested up to 15kg. Most are fine above that.
You'll probably find his weight will start to slow down a bit now anyways.

Are you sure he weighs that much? 12kgs is an awful lot for a 6 month old. You'd expect a 3 year old to be about 15kg.

Well, call me irresponsible but I have used prams way past their user weight (shopping, child etc.) and nothing ever happened. I think they are protecting themselves.

that IS a lot. i know it sounds stupid, but are you absolutely sure he weighs that much??? that's over 26lb isn't it???

An older child weighing the same will have the weight distributed differently so it wouldn't necessarily be the same issue.

A 6 month old weighing that much would need a chair that will support him/her properly imo.

yes ladies he does infact weigh that much! had issues at clinic last wk due to his weight. he was 11lb (5kg) at birth tho! so he's quite sizable n am worried he won't be supported properly. my dd is 26months old n weighs less than ds! so no problems there. so if its just pram/buggie makers coverin themselves or only safety testin up to 15kg (average toddler weight) then i should be ok to continue with current buggie????

Wow, he must be way off the charts!

I'm not sure about the buggy issue then - if it's quite sturdy I guess it'll be ok.

What buggy are you currently using hunny?

yes you would be fine - if you look at the US the same buggies over there have a much higher weight limit on quite a few compared to here.

usin silvercross pop duo wen have both out or a bruin umbrella fold one (can't remember name! tis in boot of hubbies car) both have 15kg maximum.
and yes MoonUnitAlpha he's significantly above the 99.6th centila at last weigh in but was over it also at birth! once he's supportin himself properly i'll not be so worried but he looks kinda uncomfy in current buggie

I know the Maclaren US spec is often diff and CERTAINLY baby jogger! Baby joggers are solid

I agree with Us guidelines being different for the same buggy. I have a Stokke Xplory and when I purchased it the UK and US weight limits were completely different. I will be following US guidelines, it just means the US have tested it more I think!

Keep an eye out for a baby jogger city mini...40lbs I beleive.

Also your sons weigh will level out when he decreases.

I know the bee + is around 20kg and the micralite superlite is 25kg in the instruction book but 17kg on the outer box (different weights for different countries safety tests?)
Most maclarens are said to be 25kg in the states yet only 15kg in the UK (same models).

I think the uk test is more stringent on if the child can thrash about and tip the buggy backwards (and possibly hit head on floor)...becuase the frame remains strong enough to actually seat that weight still - it's got to be a movement/tipping test where the uk limits most prams to 15kg.

There is an easylife sport buggy that takes a huge weight easily (and pushes easily too) - but it is all terrain not a buggy. Often found on ebay relatively cheaply. The guy who designed it started out designing mobility equipment I believe. It takes up to 45kg - or if you add an extra front wheel kit (converting from 3 wheels to 4) It can take 63kg!!!

Easylife Sport Info on weight limits
My 8y old is fairly hefty - weighs around 36kg and it makes light work of her - she mostly likes to sit in it as a seat on picnics and doesn't really ride in it because her 2y old brother gets so mad if someone else rides in his "pwam"!
I just made the seat even comfier/supportive by adding a lambskin liner.
