It isn't just for old ladies! (either that or maybe Im getting old!). It has THE best lighting department. Honestly I would never have thought about looking in there and they have loads and loads of lovely lights. I'm really impressed. Just wanted to share.

fabbadabbado Sat 23-Feb-13 09:55:31

I know!! Lighting good and I bought loads of great towels there as was looking for bright colours, also get my doormats and barrier mats there. I do tend to order online as they often do discount codes (last order was 24% off for 24 hours) and also, the shops themeselves are still popular with the old lady brigade, who also staff the tills ...

lalalonglegs Sat 23-Feb-13 11:09:47

The lighting is a revelation, I found some great stuff for a friend's house there - do still feel embarrassed that someone I know will see me going in or out though and won't know I'm only there for the lighting blush.

Bunbaker Sat 23-Feb-13 11:18:45

"It has THE best lighting department."

I know grin. I had a Saturday job in their lighting department many years ago. We were always busy. They do nice towels ans bedding as well.

Most of their clothes are a bit old ladyish, but it is always worth popping in because occasionally they have some really nice clothes. I bought a fab maxi dress there last year.

Watch out, their customer service is crap though. Loads of online complaints.

"Watch out, their customer service is crap though"

That hasn't been my experience at all. In fact I would rate their customer service very highly.

Bunbaker, I worked in the lighting dept as a Saturday job about 30 years ago. God, it was so hot under all these lights!

Bunbaker Sat 23-Feb-13 12:17:47

"God, it was so hot under all these lights!"

Wasn't it just. I worked there during the long hot summer of 1976 and I sweated buckets - and we weren't allowed to have bare legs either, we had to wear tights!

Lilymaid Sat 23-Feb-13 12:37:44

I'm old and it has always been the best inexpensive lighting department - we have bought many items from there over 30+ years (remember Prova). I wouldn't go into the shop for any other reason.

Rhubarbgarden Sat 23-Feb-13 14:34:54

Yep. BHS homewares v good.

Ihatemytoes Sat 23-Feb-13 17:13:49

I've recently rediscovered them. Got some fab cushions, and a lovely toaster in there recently. And they do free delivery on orders over £30.

We have one near us on a retail park. It's just a home store, no clothes but right next door to Laura Ashley, next at home etc and its always got more people in.
We got our cushions there and I was very surprised.

beachyhead Sat 23-Feb-13 17:45:42

My mum always said 'BHS for lights and hats!' That must have been 30 years ago grin

21march Sat 23-Feb-13 18:57:48

My mother bought my school towels and linen there thirty years ago.

They're still doing good service, though my nametapes have worn through on some of them!

They do gorgeous inexpensive chandeliers in both modern and traditional styles. I've read somewhere that Philip Green's wife is an interior designer and gives him the final nod on stock hmm

moggiek Sat 23-Feb-13 19:36:16

Virgil - what a revelation! Just looked on their site, some really fab stuff at great prices. I have to admit I haven't even thought about BHS in years!

Virgil Sat 23-Feb-13 21:11:51

I found a discount code too! Have just ordered a ceiling light in the perfect style. Very pleased and shall be telling everyone in RL about BHS!

landofsoapandglory Sat 23-Feb-13 21:14:45

BHS has always had a good lighting department. I remember my parents buying lights there for our house when I was a child 30+ years ago.

They had some lovely bed linen in the window the other day too.

auntpetunia Sun 24-Feb-13 08:41:32

Another one who worked in lighting on a Saturday! We also had to wear flesh tights and blouses with neck tie and a fabulous polyester pinafore in airforce blue. Gorgeous and sooo hot under those lights.

Bunbaker Sun 24-Feb-13 09:42:31

They were very formal and strict to work for. We weren't allowed to use first names for anyone with a higher status than ourselves, so it was Miss this, Mrs that, Mr so-and-so etc and the managers never called us by our christian names either (this was 1976).

steppemum Sun 24-Feb-13 10:04:11

beachyhead - my mum has always said the same! BHS for lights!

Cremolafoam Sun 24-Feb-13 10:16:37

Bhs lighting dep has always been good . I'm afraid I agree about customer service tho . Have had 2 unpleasant experiences with them.
Still they also do V&A horockses bedding . Vair posh
confused

Bunbaker Sun 24-Feb-13 10:31:18

I think the customer service must vary in different stores. The service in the Meadowhall branch has been exceptionally good.

jaynebxl Mon 25-Feb-13 06:17:35

Our local BHS has been totally revamped and no longer feels like the same store. Great service, lovely cafe for taking kids to and some nice kids' clothes. I was shocked!

GrandPoohBah Mon 25-Feb-13 11:00:03

I love BHS for all homewares, not just lighting - I've had some great stuff there, most recent was a knitted throw for the sofa.

I tell people and they look at me like I'm bonkers!

ISeeSmallPeople Mon 25-Feb-13 11:43:05

Their lights are great. Even better in one of their many sales. I've bought lovely chandeliers, both traditional and modern, which look like they cost much more.

fluffiphlox Mon 25-Feb-13 11:49:04

In the 1980s, BHS sold about 30% of the country's lighting. The market is much more fragmented now but I believe the quality and design is still good

Aunt petunia, before I was in lighting, I was in the food hall with a straw boater, A-line green and white pinafore, a snot green blouse and a velvet bow tie. The blue polyester lighting unifom was far more stylish! wink

auntpetunia Tue 26-Feb-13 07:26:40

Ha Agent my cousin worked in the restaurant …I remember that uniform well. I can't say that static heaven was stylish but it was better than that.

BikeRunSki Tue 26-Feb-13 07:31:38

BHS homewares are a well known "secret" I thought. You know the H stands for Home?

jaynebxl Tue 26-Feb-13 07:42:49

Wondering what else the H might have stood for!

MerryMingeWhingesAgain Tue 26-Feb-13 08:05:06

I have bought towels and bedding there, they reduce stuff generously when there's a sale on. Also great for hard to find lightbulbs in said lighting dept. Shame the clothes are truly appalling and lots of tat in ours. Little Wallis section is handy though as we have no proper branch of any clothes shops here.

Startail Tue 26-Feb-13 08:25:51

Lovely bright bedding that washes well.

Also leggings that are warm (I have expensive Great Plains ones that are colder than tights).

Cheap cropped trousers that last way better than M&S including daft colours used by DD1 (14) to wind up her Guider at camp.

Longdistance Tue 26-Feb-13 08:33:41

I agree about the lighting dept. Also the homewares are pretty decent.
I did used to buy Xmas decs from them that have lasted well. Don't know if they're still good for them?

senua Tue 26-Feb-13 08:41:38

The Good Housekeeping Istitute have a list of "approved products". There are only two things on their Household Items list and one of them is BHS's Ultimate towel range.
The Household Proucts list (washing powder etc) is dominated by Aldi/Lidl.

noddyholder Tue 26-Feb-13 08:44:05

I always use in developments most interior designers do for £ and style! I also buy OTHER THINGS in there too Much admired shoes and a few clothes shock

Bunbaker Tue 26-Feb-13 17:15:40

The clothes are hit and miss. I bought a lovely cardigan from there on Sunday, but quite often the clothes seem to aimed at women a few decades older than me.

noddyholder Tue 26-Feb-13 18:09:39

Yes I agree but there are some bargains if you look. I am spectacularly fussy and bought a jacket there and some wedges

Can you link to the cardigan? I'm looking for a nice one.

Bunbaker Wed 27-Feb-13 11:41:39

It's this one. I bought it in aqua.

Thanks to this thread I had a little looksie yesterday and you were right! Lovely home stuff. I may have bought some cushions.

Now I just need to throw coffee over the old ones as an excuse to swap them over

Viviennemary Wed 27-Feb-13 11:48:55

I think their bedlinen is really good for the price.

sydlexic Wed 27-Feb-13 11:58:14

I admired a modern chrome and crystal light fitting in BHS, my DDS bought it for Mother's day. It is so bright I worry people with think it is a light house. It is beautiful though.
