have just had a quote for £1600 just for the suite, from the plumber - must be able to do it for less than that surely?. HAs anyone done their bathroom recently which stuff did you choose and where from, please?

Don't bother with a 'suite' - you'll get better stuff buying separates.

Topps tiles have some really lovely, designer-looking glass basins in their sale for less than £100. Check their website.

Try trade places for your toilet and bath. If you want something simple and white then they'll be cheaper.

For taps try ebay - loads of really cool, unusual stuff ridiculously cheap. Most of it will be shipped in from Asia, but I paid about £20 for a designer tap that would have been about £200 here.

Also look for ex display stuff at local bathroom showrooms. I found a bargain panel shower for £130 - less than half price.

£1600 is ridiculous, by the way - must be solid gold taps!!!

Plumbing and labour £1,500 approx here. I use plumb center where poss. But would rather the customer chooses themselves. Just don't get a cheap shower encloser.

of course this depends on what you want where, tiling, plastering, pipework etc. If it's a straight out and new in then should be alot cheaper!

Yeah £1600 seems like a lot. Bought our suite including a shower enclosure and taps from www.showerenclosuresuk.com for about £1100 delivered. A local plumber who they recomended fitted the lot in two days. Obviously it depends on the quality of finish you're trying to achieve, you can spend £150.00 on a quadrant enclosure for example or you can spend £1600, same goes for most things I guess...

Have fun!

Yer, if you go to a smallish store they sell off ex-display and I'm sure they would take offers. The bath doesnt need to be part of the set if its plain.

You do get what you pay for. The number of layers of paint on the china, if its imported, design, plastic toilet seat, etc. I'd stick to the main makes too as I have had experience of trying to find new toilet cisterns for a very cheap wc and it cost me x3 times over a standard - armitage shanks etc. They are not all the same! Dont believe it when they say "oh its the same it doesnt have a makers mark on it" - rubbish! The bath you want a decent thickness. cheap is thin. There are better reinforced bath makers out there for around £200.

Watch the taps, cheap doesnt last. with young children make sure they can turn them as the ones I have here you cant turn them if yr hands are wet. They dont shine always look crap.

Say max £200 bath, £250 wc, £250 sink plus taps and accessorries £900 max. Sometimes if the plummer gets it he gets the trade price so he pockets that diff there and then adds profit on for spending time sourcing it. You get the dims off him and source yourself.

agree with everything bacon said. the very cheapest will be crap and not last, we were warned specifically about making sure you have brass fittings on the inside of taps as they last a lot better, and paying for a decent flush system/cistern on loos.

We fitted 2 bathrooms and a downstairs loo with mix and matc stuff - lots of Roca which is mid range, with some other bits thrown in. We got a local showroom to do the legwork, work out exactly what we needed and then took the info to the local trade place which charged us about 30 percent less.
