Wooden stairs over the stone slabs.... possible?

Our back garden has an elevated part and 4 stone stairs leading to it. I want the stone stairs gone, firstly, because they are ugly and secondly, we have toddler twins.
Would it be possible to build a wooden staircase over the existing steps or should we get rid of the stone slabs first?

Advice greatly appreciated!

Is is solid stone blocks or slabs? I'd pull them up and replace with sleepers or something...

Wooden staircase would be fine although I think stone sounds nicer.

Slabs and uuuugly ones, chipped from here-there and wonky as well. . What are sleepers?

Railway sleepers - big thick lengths of wood.
