Downlighters

Hey - does anyone have downlighters in a new build - particularly "in the roof"?

Are they easy to fit? We have an electrician, but i've heard about carpets being ripped up. Really like the lighting effect but can't decide if it's going to be worth what sounds like it might be a big cost
