If you've got a utility room...

Has it got a window in it? The Architect is doing our drawings and just rang to ask. DP reckons not (it would only lead into the alleyway between us and next door)

I'm worried about it getting damp - he thinks an extractor fan is fine.

No window but we do have an extractor fan.

Yeah ours has a window the washer and tumble are in there

Also I dogs sleep there so I wouldn't like it not to have a window.

Ours doesn't. Probably because it was created in about 1850.

We have the central heating boiler in there which warms it up and the tumble dryer and no damp problems yet. I do try not to have loads of wet washing around though.

If you are creating from scratch, I would definitely prefer it to have a window in it. For light as much as ventilation. Would make a big difference.

Ours does, it was part of an extension and looks out onto our driveway so we've had frosted glass put in.

Yes, ours does. I like having natural light in there. It does only look at next doors end wall and there's a narrow passage between the two houses. I do have a net curtain up so I can empty the washing machine naked if I like.

Ours has a big window that overlooks a frankly horrible view out the side. It still makes the futility room less depressing.

No, but it does have a glazed door. I would prefer a window if there was a choice. Extractor fan is noisy and I'd rather just open a window.

Ours has a side entrance and a 1000x1200mm window.

Mine has two windows and a partly glazed door. It's great for natural light and ventilation- extractor fans and noisy and annoying . Fine if you have no alternative.

Defo go for a window .

Ours just has a sky light which we very rarely open. Don't have a problem with damp but ceiling is quite high, maybe that helps.

We have a window with frosted glass as it looks to the neighbours side wall and the passageway between the houses. Much prefer natural light.

Yes mine does.

My utility room has a window in it. I rarely open it as I am now afraid of leaving windows open in my house because of birds having flown in too many times. I love birds, but even sparrows (and especially starlings) become terrifyingly large and speedy when they can't find their way out of a small room full of clothes airers.

I appreciate this may not help you and your dh come to a decision about your window dilemma.

No window but it does have a glazed door. It doesn’t have an extractor fan either. It has never got damp even though i have a tumble drier and a pulley for drying clothes.

No window, we have an extractor. No damp either. Would prefer a window though. It's a bit dark.

Ours has a half glazed door, a large window and a ceiling extractor fan. All are useful because we also have a wooden ceiling airer which I use to hang washing on straight from the machine. The shirts straight on to hangers dry well and it's good to have some natural air coming into the room when damp washing's around. Much better than the extractor (we don't use it)

No window and I really wish we had one.

Just an extractor. it's too full of crap to have room for a window

Just the door out onto the path around the house. No extractor and no damp. I don't shut the door between it and the kitchen much though.

Mine is just being fitted and doesn't have a window as it's our old kitchen which has been converted into one. We have a loo in it also along with tumble dryer, washing machine and sink. Extractor is not noisy...quieter than the tumble dryer. Our units are white gloss with dark grey worktop and will probably have lightish coloured floors and wall tiles with white or similar paint on walls. I think it's fine without a window particularly as there is a loo in it so need to worry about window coverings etc.

Ours has two doors with partial glazing and a small window which doesn't have an opening, but the door to the back garden is never fucking shut often open with the dog going in and out. Have never had damp or mustiness.

Ours has a window & a door into the garden.

If you can have a window I would, even if it's a small high one opening onto an alleyway.

I wouldn't have a utility without a window or door.

I imagine it would have to have a door or how would you get in? Wink (Okay, I know you mean external door but it sounded quite funny Grin).
