tiny flies where a pond used to be

I've recently moved into a house that had a pond in the garden (I'd imagine that's the reason for them) and there is a block of tiny flies flying around where the pond used to be/grass area beside where the pond used to be. They seem to only be in this area. Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

You won't be able to get rid of them. They are midges I think. I have a spot in my front garden and also a particular spot in my back garden they like to fly over. I've lived here ten years and it's always been the same. They've never caused me a minutes bother.

Maybe its ley lines or something?

It may be because the ground is very wet there. We had an area that was previously a pond, had midges and got very boggy when it rained. Dh decided to turn the area into a flower bed as the grass kept dying because it was so wet, when he dug it up we discovered they hadn't removed the pond liner so the water had no where to go and it was midgy heaven.
