Best flooring for dogs? Is vinyl any good?

Hoping for some good advice.

At the moment, we have a cheap grey carpet throughout our two bed flat. It's only been down for 3.5 years, but it has been so stained and dirty looking since we got our little dog 2 years ago. Our vinyl in our kitchen is also grey (open plan with living room, but flooring is separated at a join) and it is not too bad, but does have some rips and doesn't quite match in colour with our kitchen units, so I would love to rip it all out and get it all changed!

Because of how dirty the carpet gets with the dog, we have been regularly hiring carpet doctor every 6 months or so, and I also had it professionally cleaned, but it makes no difference. I don't want to get another carpet as I suspect the same will happen again very quickly, and also I don't know what colour to get as I love grey carpets. but it'll end up with too much grey in the living room (grey sofas, grey furniture, grey flooring).

DH is set against anything other than carpet. Our little dog likes to jump on and off the sofas, and we have heard horror stories of dogs who have slipped on flooring and seriously hurt themselves. Does anyone have vinyl with a similarly playful/jumpy dog and find it okay? Or is DH right and carpet is the best option?

We have two lurchers and karndean all through the downstairs of the house (different types). It cleans easily, has stayed looking nice, and they have no problems with slipping.
In our old house we had engineered wood downstairs and the cats used to slide round the corners!

Thank you so much for replying. That has been really helpful. I feel that I have pretty much made up my mind, as I am totally sick of carpet. I just want to make sure it's a safe option for my dog.

I have wooden flooring down stairs.. The dog slips when she's throwing herself about but I have rugs in living room and a rubber in dining room so that gives her plenty of grip. Plus I can change them when they get grubby it want a change xx

Karndean or Amitco, great have had it in a succession of homes with dogs.
I always go for the di vinci range, as was advised by an expert that the knight tile range was not particularly durable compared to the other ranges.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I've had a look at some of the brands but I think my budget might limit my choice somewhat. I'm going to order a few samples from a place online, prices are very cheap so I'm not expecting much from it.

We have vinyl in the kitchen and the cats seem to have no issue with it. They do slide on an engineered wood floor.

Hair doesn't stick to it per se but needs hoovering to remove properly otherwise you are just moving cat hair around with a floor mop which is disgusting.
