Grills. What fresh hell?

Planning new kitchen. All lovely and happy. We had the final specs through and realised that the specified ovens don't allow you to grill with the door open. They turn OFF if you open the door.
DH is the primary grill user and does not want to grill with the door shut.
Do all new ovens exert this closed door grilling thing?
Tell me of your new ovens that allow you to grill with the door open.
Please.

We have a Bosch oven that allows you to grill open. I never thought ovens wouldn't to be fair, my big frying pan wouldn't fit in with the door shut to do Spanish omelette etc...

Thanks socks, no we never thought they wouldn't either!
We only realised because we went through the spec online and thought 'Ooh what does that feature mean?'
We're looking at Bosch instead. They suggest you shut the door but it doesn't seem to turn off so that might be the clincher!

but if you shut the door, that is oven cooking with a top element, NOT grilling

Seems odd really, imagine grilling sausages or bacon with the door shut, all that spitting fat in an enclosed space. Anyone use one ?

I think I'd prefer to grill with the door shut. I rarely grill because it ends up with a smokey kitchen all the time. I'd rather keep that inside the oven.

Turning off if you open the door is silly though. How are you supposed to check and turn stuff? Ovens don't turn off when you open the door.

Grin at being a primary griller what on earth does he grill? I've used mine 3 times in the 3'years since I had my kitchen fitted.

In my new kitchen you grill with the oven door shut. Yes it does spit a bit but, despite my reservations, it does grill the food really nicely. What I have had to get used to is pre heating the grill. My old gas oven was completely rubbish apart from the grill, which worked a treat and was good to go whenever you needed it.

PS my grill stays on with the door open, so in theory you could grill with door open, but you're not supposed to. Hmm

This did my nut in too but it's fine, really. I think it's to meet energy efficiency requirements or something (less heat escapingthrough open door) but our Siemens oven grills farbetter with the door closed. It was rubbish grilling with the door open,at which point I was forced to read the manualGrin

We don't own a toaster as grills make the only acceptable toast, so we use ours a lot.

DH absent-mindedly shut the door on our old oven while grilling (it was a smeg) and the glass exploded Shock

I have never left the oven door open whilst grilling. Are you meant to? Confused

I don't really grill a lot. My oven is a massive thing with big doors that I would probably fall over if I left open.

Our rental flat comes with a multi-oven thing. They're combined microwave/ovens/grills etc. and are all the rage around here (not in UK). They're like combi-microwaves but slightly bigger and much worse. They basically do nothing well, you HAVE to set a time which can be no longer than 1.5 hours and everything stops when you open the door. You then have to press play to start it again, which I forget half of the time. I can't wait to move somewhere with a proper oven again!

Sorry, that was a bit of a rant. To answer your question - yes, and it's both weird and rubbish.

When we lived in Germany, the appliances didn't have grills at all - I've the feeling that the new way they do grills in UK is to make it easier for them to make for UK and continental market. I've gotten used to grilling with the door shut now (although I must say that I hardly use it).

I hardly use our grill but DH makes cheese on toast once or twice a week. Hence he wants to be able to see what he's doing.

The oven we nearly bought sounds very similar Bromeliad and I fear we would have felt very similar.

Adorabelle door down used to be the norm! Or the eye level eyebrow scorching gas grills that had no doors.

Thanks everyone. So those of you who could grill with the door down if the whimsey took you, what make of oven do you have? Any newish Bosch oven owners?
