How to get quotes without drawings?

Can you get quotes for house extension without drawings? Or should we get drawings first, at the risk that they are too ambitious and we can't afford to do the extension? What's the best way of going about this?

We want to extend our house and have some budget set aside for this but don't know if our expectations are too great. We have an architect coming round but he doesn't give ballpark extension costs.

Any advice welcome!

A good architect can work within your budget. Obviously finish/kitchens/glazing can be a budget-breaker (and your architect doesn't know what standard you'll want with regard to these), but your architect should at least be able to draw up plans that work towards your budget.

It is usual to roughly quote extension costs in price per square metre. Get an idea of how big you are going to go and you will know if it's going to be £5,000 or £50,000.
Article here to give the idea, but it is three years' old. Trying googling to find current rates applicable for your area.

I think you've had good advice about trying to work out the size of your extension. We worked on the basis of about £1.5k per Sq metre, plus VAT and we're not too far out. We're doing a double storey extension which is slightly cheaper per Sq m than single storey so if you're intending on doing just a single storey you might need more. That's just to the plastered finish. Kitchen, bathroom, decoration on top of that.
