Fireplace Surround

Hi, we have moved into a 1930s house which has a chimney and fireplace in the living room, but it doesn't have a fireplace surround/mantlepiece.
Does anyone have any idea where would sell a fairly reasonable priced mantlepiece, as I think it looks a bit empty without one.
It's only a little terraced house so can't have anything overly fancy/huge in there, but I do think it needs something.

what sort of look do you like?

Look on ebay 1930s fireplaces , do nearest first search, get your eye in for the style you like and then one comes up near by grab it, check gumtree.

It is always wise to get a period appropriate feature back into a house as it always helps bring out character of a property.

Thanks so much, that's really helpful. The 2nd one you've posted is beautiful, although I wonder whether I'm drawn to it as it's a similar style to the one my parents have in their living room.

I think something like the 2nd one, or just something simple might be best. It's not a huge room, but it's a decent sized chimney so I think it needs something.

At least the 1930s were a great time for creative fireplaces, so there are quite a range to choose from.

No, we'd not want a working fireplace. There is a gas fire there at the moment which has been capped. The actual grate (not sure of the terminology?) is actually quite nice looking, so we'd be happy to leave it in there for the time being as a decorative feature I suppose.

It does seem like there's a large range of surrounds that we could choose from. We will be putting alcove shelving up on each side though so not sure whether a tall one would work. I suppose we need to get that done and then start looking for the perfect fireplace properly.

I would find the fire place you really like and then you can use it to lay out the alcoves to it's dimensions, it will give a joined up look.

it might make you want to reflect the bottom part in cupboard or reflect the tile colour on the back wall.

I try to get clients to build folders of images for each areas, they don't have to be totally perfect, but contain elements you like, the folders get big quickly, you then keep re editing , it helps you yourself form a picture of what you are trying to achieve. Which always means you will end up with something you really like, not something you were stuck with because you just had to do something.
