Bracknell???

Hello!

Me and DH and DS (2 yr old) are thinking of moving to Bracknell.

It works for DH because he works in London so can get into Waterloo relatively quickly, but we're not entirely sure which areas of Bracknell are nice and worth buying in?? It's such a minefield, and obviously with the little one it's hard to spend every weekend visiting Bracknell when it's the only chance DH gets to spend with DS!

Anyway, does anyone live there and know which areas are nice? We don't want to live (dare I come across as snooty!) in an area with lots of youths hanging about, people who live in council housing, etc. we've had so many problems in our current place with break ins into our car (twice!), people drinking during the night (make that every night!) and making a racket in our street, all our neighbours have become social housing tenants and so care little for their surroundings, dumping their rubbish etc without the bag, chicken bones strewn across the street...!
10 years ago it used to be really lovely here but not any more, so we wish to move...!

Any advice is sincerely welcome.

Thanks!
G xx

Well I did come on to offer some advice but as a social housing tenant I shan't bother.

Ah man I didn't mean it like that!!! Apologies, but it's just literally my entire area is full of HMO properties let out by the council to people who really don't care... I promise that I didn't want to generalise but i don't know how else to get across the reality of what I'm facing!

Of course, absolutely not all council tenants are bad, but those around me seem to be some that have no vested interest in the area or their property.

I do apologise once more for my horrendous generalisation, but that is the reality of where I personally live. I'm sure outside my area council tenants are lovely.

I don't want this to end up a debate about council tenants vs non council etc. so sorry once more. Smile

Some areas are great, some I wouldn't live in, if I had the choice - the OFSTED's for most of the Primary schools are now up to Good. All the newer more expensive housing estates have affordable housing etc as per all the guidelines, so you will never avoid that no matter where you look. Do you have any houses that you've seen, if you ask about specific areas I can give you more details. As a very, very general rule IMO Warfield, Binfield (both will deny they are Bracknell) Martin's Heron, Jennets Park, Forest Park, Hanworth, Birch Hill are all ok, obvs the odd places to avoid and there are far more places, to try. Not sure if that's any help and I'm sure there are others that will say avoid completely, but we like it. Also depends what type of property you are looking for.

Have you looked at crowthorne? Really nice village, just next to Bracknell

If you need the train into town then Crowthorne is no use as you'd have to go to Wokingham and then change. Very long way to get to Waterloo.

You need to be in either Ascot, Martins Heron or central Bracknell which are on the reading - waterloo train line. Ascot is nice - as is Sunningdale, but both are more expensive than Bracknell town. Martin's Heron looks like a 1990's large estate without much else (happy to be corrected though). In central Bracknell I'd go for Harman's Water.

My understanding is that the best secondary in Bracknell town is Ranlaegh (sp?) and Ascot is Charters (disclaimer: I don't live in Bracknell, just work there occasionally and have a friend who lives there).

Dh used to work in Bracknell. Traffic is/was awful (this was in the 90s). We didn't live there, though - lived in Wokingham, which was much nicer IMO.

Wherever you go, make sure there's a direct train to London. Delays on the transport network in that area can get horrendous with awful knock-on effects, so your dh will want to be sure it's only one train he's waiting for.
