Black showerhead/bathroom taps

Ipanema01 · 03/09/2015 12:08

For our new loft bathroom I'm going for white marble for the shower wall, white hexagonal tiles for the floor and possibly white subway tiles for the rest of the room and I'm thinking of black hardware thanks to lots of cool pinterest and instagram inspo. Everything I love seems to be in Oz for some reason! Has anyone managed to find any black showerhead and taps? The ones I have found so far have been tacky which is not the look I am going for...

This will be fine in a showroom, but not so good in an actual house.

Are you in a soft water area? Limescale remover dissolves marble (so does soft water, but more slowly)

Painted or anodised taps will be nowhere near as hard wearing as chrome, so the finish will go dull (or wear off if you use anything stronger than a damp sponge to clean them.

This sounds an odd mix of tiles and marble to me. Subway and white hexagonal? A mix of patterns too. Black taps - cannot think of anything worse. Chrome or satin finish taps and definitely no hexagonal tiles on the floor. Last used inthe 1980s. Large format tiles onthe floor with the subway (metro) tiles is the only way to go. I would ditch the marble too. Sounds very Rusian/Italian over the top.

Well that's the OP's plans well and truly ripped to shreds! Fwiw I saw a photo of something which sounds very similar and was a Victorian bathroom recently. Without the black brassware though. Can't find the original image, but it was similar to this. You can get both marble look ceramic metro tiles and marble ones.

Ouch Smile
TBH, I'm not completely sure on the black taps either but it'd be good to at least find something UK based so I could at least have a look at styles here. I think what I have in my head is quite minimal rather than flashy
I've attached a couple of my inspo photos - hopefully they don't look too Mafioso!

The Dornbracht Tara range of brassware is beautiful, comes in Chrome, Platinum, Matt black and Matt white. It is pricey though, but the quality is very good!

Cheapest you will find it is on the German website Reuter.

WaggleBee · 03/09/2015 22:20

If you share the bathroom with a hairy chested/legged man, don't get white floor tiles unless you want to be clearing up body hair for the rest of your life.

Every. Single. Hair and spec shows up on a white tiled floor. They need careful cleaning daily.

tokyobananas · 03/09/2015 22:42

I think it sounds really nice!

Might be worth looking into aged brass rather than black - the contrast with the white is what's nice and you might find more options in brass.

Check out CP Hart's website, or their showroom if you're in London. It's not cheap though!

PigletJohn · 04/09/2015 00:09

Waggle

perhaps, in time, this body hair will turn white and blend in?

wowfudge · 04/09/2015 06:48

Oh my days Hiahia - £70 + for a hook in that range. I dread to think how much the taps are.

Hiahia · 04/09/2015 10:28

Haha yes @wowfudge it's pretty dear. The black finish even more so than the chrome too obviously.

Ipanema01 · 04/09/2015 10:59

Thanks for the suggestions! I am indeed married to a hairy muddy rugby player and am totally burying my head in the sand...
Hiahia what have you done... I've found exactly what I'm looking for, thank you. Way too expensive but I may go for it and suffer the consequences Wink
Any other thoughts on the marble/marble alternatives? I want the whitest look possible (rather than grey looking)and have been favouring Calacatta but I also saw some amazing Arabescato marble panels from Mandarin Stone which has more of a dramatic look

I do want to think about cleaning and longevity but I'm not sure of a good alternative option with the same sort of look.

Hah ipanema01 you're welcome/I'm sorry. Arabescato can be beautiful, and Calacatta and Statuary are my absolute favourites. It's going to look amazing! Do go see the specific slabs if you go that way, or plenty of samples if you go the marble type way.

Ipanema01 · 15/09/2015 11:03

Thanks everyone for the input - I've ended up ordering chrome! I love the black but don't want it to end up dating so have gone for the boring safe option.

I'm now trying to find metro tiles for the wall and unsure whether to go for glossy or matt - any thoughts?
Floor will be tiny matt hexagonal tiles with a white Statuario marble shower wall (or marble look depending on quotes I get back!)

wowfudge · 15/09/2015 14:41

I'd go with matt to really highlight the marble.

Ipanema01 · 02/10/2015 10:44

Resurrecting this thread as I need more advice!
I have found porcelain sheets that exactly replicate the bookmatched marble I wanted at a third of the cost Grin My problem now is that I need to find a glazier or similar to cut the sheets to size as my builder is reluctant to attempt it.
Has anyone done this? I've googled glaziers with not much luck/response. I'm based in West London if that helps.

Ipanema01 · 02/10/2015 10:45

And thanks wowfudge, I went for glossy but flat in the end with a matt hexie floor

OP posts:
wowfudge · 02/10/2015 12:35

Can the supplier not cut to size for you?

Ipanema01 · 02/10/2015 13:56

They can't - they ship it all as it comes. I have gone back to them to ask for a recommendation of someone and they are going to come back to me. Painful but I love how it looks

OP posts:
dynevoran · 03/10/2015 08:51

Could you link to the porcelain please? I'd be really interested to see the effect. Thanks!

Ipanema01 · 07/10/2015 11:04

dynevoran I don't have a link but this is a photo of the kind of look achieved with marble. I went to see the marble in person and then the porcelain, and it looks exactly the same. Definitely going to go for it if I can find someone to cut it for us!

Are you sure those taps are black? Some of them look more like a kind of gunmetal finish to me - but this may just be the weird tiny way they appear on Mumsnet.

I would stick to the darkest metal finish you can find at a reasonable cost and then add black accessories instead. That way, you will still get a similar look, but without the nightmare of cleaning.

I have a black tiled floor in my bathroom (put in before I moved in) and it shows up every bit of dirt, hair, toothpaste. I have to mop it every day and it still looks crappy. I will never go for black in a bathroom on the basis of that!!

shovetheholly · 07/10/2015 11:10

Ooops Blush just realised this is an old thread! Hope your taps look terrific OP!

Ipanema01 · 07/10/2015 11:25

Thanks shovetheholly, I've ordered chrome :) Not being installed until the weekend but I think I've made the right choice!
