Entry-level John Lewis vs Ikea Metod Kitchen (plus any advice on London fitters)

We are doing up our house in London and trying not to go too crazy as we a) have no money left after buying the house and b) it's not our dream/forever home. So we want it to be functional and as nice as possible for us and any future buyer in say five years time, but without getting handmade wooden cabinets iyswim (I wish…).

We got a quote for John Lewis today. They were so nice and helpful, didn't try and upsell us at all, and one of their basic kitchens was a reasonable rip-off of the Alno style they also had in store. We're going for minimalist doors and a new composite work surface, we need all new appliances (washer/dryer/dishwasher/stove/oven) and with fitting it was coming out at about 17k so I expect 20k in reality. What we really like with John Lewis is the commitment they seem to have made to see that the fitters finish the job - we have had ENDLESS problems in London with different handymen/electricians etc just not finishing off jobs properly and never returning (a whole other thread… they just don't care, even if you withhold payment they seem to move on to bigger, better jobs and never look back! We are really nice, inoffensive, tea-and-coffee-and-biscuit offering, fast-paying people, but to no avail! Grrrrr. Sorry, tangent).

However, I love the look of Ikea kitchens and imagine that we could get what we want for a bit less there. Does anyone have experience of making this kind of choice and what did you go for in the end? Were you happy with your choice? Does anyone have a great N London Ikea fitter they'd recommend?

Sorry, long post but kitchens are expenssssssivvvvvee!

If JL gave you a plan - why don't you use it to price up an ikea kitchen ? You might find the difference will surprise you !

Reading with interest as we are also planning to redo our kitchen and are wavering between John Lewis and Ikea.

I think if JL have actually quoted a figure it shouldn't increase by £3K. I would be horrified if this happened to me and I'd probably have to sell one of my kidneys Grin

The 'first collection' range at JL is lovely - seems better quality to me than the Ikea ones, and I also love the quartz worktops, although ££££.

We don't need new appliances apart from oven and hob, and would not get those from Ikea anyway. I don't like the idea of having to coordinate different suppliers and fitters, the work dragging on, having to take more time off work etc. The lovely man at JL said the whole thing would take a week, with everything delivered on a Friday and the installation carried out the next Monday-Friday. Quartz worktops are templated once the kitchen is in, and they fit a temporary one in the meantime.

What style/colours are you going for?

I think you could get what you wanted for a lot less in Ikea.

Our units, including dishwasher and fridge came to 2k, we spent another 1k on sink, tap, hob, oven, extractor. £300 on worktops

Oooh Tiz! Your kitchen is beautiful.

Sorry to hijack thread (i'm watching thread with interest as we're in the process of buying our first home too). Do you have to buy IKEA appliances if you buy their kitchen? I don't like the idea of that. That seems like a reasonable price for that kitchen, it's lovely!

Do IKEA have a bad reputation with fitting? I thought they offered this service.

I've turned into a kitchen stalker.....is that the Metod? The website one has dark worksurfaces but the lighter ones are much nicer.

No, it's from the range before Metod but almost identical to the GRYTNÄS in the Metod range (on the other side of the dining area we actually have some metod cupboards from that range). Pricing is similar.

We fitted the kitchen ourselves but were quoted 2k for fitting.

Can mix and match appliances with no issues. We went with Ikea for the dishwasher and fridge as they were actually hotpoint. Neff for the other bits that you actually see.

Be careful with JL kitchens, I've had two and you have to watch them like a hawk. Don't assume cos it's JL they are brilliant at ordering the right things, measuring things properly, getting the quote right, selling you things that you can actually put in your house (e.g water softeners) etc etc.

Having said all that they do last and the quality is good.

We've had an ikea kitchen and we love it. Can't post pic online as on phone but it cost £3k and people thought it looked £15k.

We are having an IKEA kitchen installed after Easter. We are using the IKEA fitters, who also fit kitchens for .... John Lewis!

We liked the customisability of the IKEA kitchen - the one we liked in JL was about 20K, we are paying £9k all in for kitchen, worktops, appliances and fitting through IKEA. We bought our own appliances.

I had my IKEA kitchen fitted by my builders about 8 years ago: I am still very happy, no signs of wear, the built-in appliances that came from there are also still working as new. My Builders moaned and moaned that there is no gap at the back of the cupboards like in other brand kitchens. So my cupboards are deeper (yay!) but if there were pipes or cables to route behind them they might be problematic (no so yay). In my case we had only one heating pipe that went floor to ceiling: it goes up inside a tall cupboard and said cupboard with drawers was no problem to fit after all. If you have IKEA-experienced fitters then it should be no issue whatsoever.
And: my worktop was ordered from a different supplier altogether as IKEA had far too long a lead time on that. Ditto for taps, sourced elsewhere when out of stock from IKEA. Total cost with appliances (oven hob dw extractor) under 2K, plus £800 for the worktop iirc Blush. We spent the money saved on really good quality carpets instead Smile

I don't know what style you like in IKEA but there is a "real home" in the April/May edition of Home Style of a property in SE London where they have used a carpenter to customise an IKEA kitchen. Looks gorgeous. Might be worth a look. Have tried to paste photo

Sorry, I bobbed off for a bit, but this is SO helpful everyone, thanks very much. Mandy, I will be off to buy that magazine tomorrow.

I am going to get the Ikea kitchen priced for definite. Really good advice about getting the taps/appliances/worktops elsewhere.

I'm starting to hear from my endless googling that the new Metod kitchen has room for services at the back so fitters finding it easier.

JulesJules - it seems like everything in London costs a couple of grand more in the end. We are saving up for the kitchen now and will always factor in a couple of grand for contingencies etc - since a friend was telling me yesterday that a sinister smell in her kitchen resulted in kitchen being un-installed and what was effectively an 'open gully' of a sewer being discovered beneath floor/concrete foundations, that had backed up over years and was seeping through, this is not a bad idea! Can you imagine the horror! Our house is so decrepit that there's no knowing what they'll find.

I think it was Skyline we looked at - looking online they say only white or ivory gloss, but I'm sure in store they had ivory matt - with a new work surface they have that looks like polished quartz but is cheaper. Going to have a marmoleum floor to be a bit retro - may start a new thread on that!

Anyone in London had a good (recent) Ikea fitter they can recommend?

Thanks again!
