How much do you pay to rent in London?

Is it just me or do other people also think that paying to rent in London is a terrible deal? I'm looking to move (my short hold is coming to an end) and can't find anything with two beds and an outside space for £1000 per month.

With the cost of childcare thrown in I can't pay more than this. Just wondering who is it out there that is paying )1500-2000 per mo th to rent a house. And why? And how can you afford it?!?! Just wondering is it just me or has the market gone mad?Confused

I feel for you. I am in London and the mortgage on my house is less than that. I have known renters with kids that have had to move out and do crazy commutes because they are not bankers.
Do you qualify for any shared ownership schemes? I feel they offer a great viable alternative to private rental in London if you can't afford to buy outright. Your outgoings (rent+mortgage+service charges) are likely to be lower than rent, and you have security off tenure.

Thank you. Sadly I have no savings at all as all I have managed to do since my kids were born was hold onto my job, use credit cards and just about survive - can't dream of purchasing. Seriously I'm looking everywhere (zone 9 included) and estate agents laugh at me when I mention my budget. I don't get it ( frustrated sigh) - who is it out there paying well above what I can afford and how are they doing it? I'm waiting for them both to go to school ( few years to go yet) so that I can free up that 1200 that I spend on childcare and start saving.

It's beyond crazy. Both rents and sale prices. I know 30 year olds in decent jobs (UK average wage type things) who are struggling to find affordable flatshares even, and buying something is so far out of reach for pretty much everyone I know, barring massive changes in fortune or inheritances. I simply don't understand who all these people who can afford it all are.

renting in london is hard. expensive. large chunk of income. but i am living in a property rented i could not ever afford to buy...

it is cheaper than same flats in street as v old decor. and do have (ever increasing) joint equity in a london flat [which when i can get the funds to get the bailiffs and kick out ex and sell will have to go towards buying some place outside london as now fully priced out of london market] .

even sharetobuy isnt cheap. but offers more seurity.

2 bed share to buy is going to cost around 1000 but you would need say 15k deposit - but have a look on sharetobuy website - also some have minimum income requirement

The share to buy scheme really is not helpful to me at all as I have no savings. And no chance of saving until the 2 dc s are at school. At the moment I am looking for a house with 2 beds that is in my local area ( bromley) nothing in our neighbourhood at all. I've looked all around London again there was nothing. We both work full time

If I want to keep my dd in the school she is at now I will have to come up with at least £1300 in rent. If we move somewhere else I want an equally good school but found nothing in my price range. Ok finished venting .

If anyone knows how people are paying that much do post and enlighten me please!!!

You should still be able to find a flat or house with outside space + two bedrooms in South London for around £1000 a month e.g. Croydon. Is that too far out?

I don't know the area e.g. amenities and safety, but found these from a quick search in Croydon on zoopla:

and if you want sharetobuy in one specific area it's not helpful anyway. as it might not exist in that precise area.

I'm in the Home Counties - 30 min commute to London and my 2 bed flat is £1100 with no garden. I feel your pain. I'm not even in a particularly nice area - or flat for that matter!

Oh God that's just ridiculous isn't it!!!

Yes I need to stay at least near to dds current school and I don't have a car so that limits it really....

I'm just amazed though because I remember renting my first house in this area for 750 per month and that was only 7 years ago. My wages have not risen that much to keep up with the prices of renting!

And all I find is flats with no outside space or places near failing schools or no schools or somewhere really nasty.

live in the South Kilbern area and have a one bedroom basement flat and pay £960 permonth, that includes concil tax,water and sewage.

I searched rightmove for Bromley and several 2-bed flats to rent came up at 1000 pcm or less. Many are 'let agreed' but may be worth contacting the agents to see if they have other stuff coming through at a similar price?

I've just looked at rightmove & you can get a 3 bed house with garden within half a mile of station for £1k a month.

When we were renting in London it was always about £1200 pcm (rented for 4 years ish until 2 yrs ago). We didn't have kids, that's how we managed it! I really feel for you, it's absolutely ludicrous.
