ideas for an alternative worktop?

title doesn't really make much sense, I shall try to explain.

utility area being created after extension has been built. the area I have is approx 1.3m wide with two floor level appliances, worktop above, shelves above that. to the left of that, at an obscure angle, will be a small sink, and I will have to make some kind of unit to house the sink etc. this unit will not have a right angle in it.

had a vague notion that I could cut some mdf to size to cover both areas and then tile the lot with mosaics so it looks like one piece

wondering if there's an easier way? another material to use? are glass mosaics just for show and not going to withstand the rigours of a worktop area

any alternative deas????
thank you

Could you use ceramic tiles? Think glass mosaics may not be hard-wearing?

ceramic mosaics were my preferred choice, they just seemed to come in bland beige stone colours. was also hoping to do it cheaply through ebay or similar, but even that is pricey

have found a small 2m chunk of laminate at Wickes for £35, is cheaper than tiles and adhesive! and time
