switching from oil-fired system to Calor gas

anyone done this? What are pros and cons? Is calor any cheaper?

We didn't do it, but I researched it extensively. Calor Gas (or similar) were some time ago doing an offer, whereby they'd install the tank or pay for the boiler. The only advantage I could see though (for us) was that you could cook with gas. It certainly wasn't any cheaper for us in terms of heating/hotwater - even with the incentives.

no. Have a google and you will come up with the comparision of prices per unit heat from all the various fuels. LPG is very pricey and you are locked into one supplier. With oil you can shop around.

the only plus is that LPG can't be stolen.

ps we are on oil-fired, we do have a gas hob with an LPG cylinder outside. Best of both worlds!

Calor isn't any cheaper when we looked. Sticking with oil. More flexibility.

We do exactly what Specialsubject does. 2 calor gas cylinders outside especially for the hob and oil-fired/woodburner central heating.

Another one here with oil central heating and gas cylinders for hob (electric oven). Calor was more expensive than oil last time I looked. Join a local bulk buying oil co-operative who shop around, with a large quantity, as lots of people order at once, to get good price on oil, and keep an eye on oil prices, top up when prices are low (like now, currently at a 4 year low).

Unless you are a) in need of a new boiler b) plagued by oil theft or c) desperately need an underground tank, then economically you won't recoup costs. You will also have to sign up to a 2 year contract. You can't just get the cheapest supplier when you need a fill. We actually have LPG and considered doing the opposite when our boiler needed replaced. In the end we stuck with the LPG just because we ran out of time to prepare/shop around. Luckily we've found a cheaper supplier so it's not so bad now.

I switched to electric. My hands were slightly tied in that it was snowing, I had no heating and I'd have needed planning permission to replace the oil boiler or have an oil tank - however I haven't regretted it.

It is more expensive to run but boiler installation was much much cheaper - it would take decades for me to have recouped my costs on either oil or gas. And I never run out of oil any more
